Weekly BHS Sports Recap: Swimming and Hockey Have Strong Starts

Basketball teams suffer tough losses, Wrestling wins two of three and Brian Kelly named to All-State team

The Bobcats got their season started in Redding on Thursday night and lost a tough three-point game to Joel Barlow (2-1) by the score of 50-47. The boys were led by senior captain Austin Yusko and junior Danny Burkhart, who both scored 14 points apiece. Junior Ralph Schatz added eight points in the loss.

Brookfield rallied from a seven-point third quarter deficit by outscoring the Falcons 18-14 in the fourth quarter.

The team will get back into action with three home games this week. They host New Milford on Monday, will participate in the Candlewood Winter Classic on Tuesday and play Platt Tech on Thursday.

Girls Basketball (3-1, 1-1):

Following their 3-0 start, the Lady Bobcats were looking for revenge and a big early season win over Kolbe Cathedral (2-3) in their first home game on Tuesday. In a rematch of , Brookfield was outscored 22-9 in the fourth quarter as they lost a tough 52-46 game.

Leading by seven points heading into the final frame, Kolbe reeled off 10 straight points to begin the decisive fourth quarter to take control of the game.

Senior Jamie Bickelhaupt and sophomore Julia DePoi led the team with 12 points each. DePoi added 10 rebounds and five steals in the loss. Fellow sophomore Paulina Harron chipped in with nine points.

The girls will play at Newtown on Monday and participate in a Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.

Hockey (2-0):

The defending SWC Champion Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury Icecats opened their season with two solid wins at the Danbury Ice Arena. On Saturday they defeated and then on Wednesday they .

In the season opener, the teams were evenly matched through regulation but BBD stepped up their game in OT, outshooting Housatonic 6-1 and getting the game-winner from Bethel junior Stephen Hallock at 3:38. Bethel junior captain Steven Segiet got the assist on the game-winner. He also opened the scoring with a goal in the first period.

The team exploded for four goals in its win over Housy. Segiet and Halock both added two goals to their early season totals in the win.

The team is off to Maine for its annual road trip to play Kennebunkport, ME, Coventry, RI, and Westbrook, ME.

Boys Swimming & Diving (3-0):

Three meets in the five days to start the season couldn't slow down the defending Class M State Champion Bobcats. The boys swam to easy wins over Bunnell/Stratford at home, New Milford and Masuk on the road to get their season started.

The team will begin its early season preparation by competing in two invitationals this week. They will travel to East Lyme to compete against three top Class M squads, East Lyme, Wethersfield and Branford, on Wednesday. Then they will travel to Cheshire on Friday to compete against Sacred Heart and Cheshire.

Wrestling (2-1):

The Bobcats began their season with an impressive 37-34 win at Masuk last week before splitting their two meets this week, defeating Joel Barlow and losing to New Milford.

After a slow start at Masuk, big pins by 135 pounder Alex Neal and 140 pounder Jack McKeever got the Bobcats going. 160 pounder Ryan McManus, 171 pounder Shea McGorty and 189 pounder Alex Vanhoof also pinned their opponents to give Brookfield the close win.

In the loss to New Milford, winners of 44 straight meets, Brookfield got strong showings from McKeever, 145 pounder Mike Delvalle, McManus and 189 pounder Joel Wamser.

The team also competed in the Plainville Tournament last Saturday. Neal and McKeever both earned first place in their matches. Delvalle and Wamser took second place while McGorty took third and McManus took a fourth place finish.

The team is scheduled to compete in the Danbury Tournament on Monday before tangling with Weston at home on Wednesday.

Football (9-3, 8-2):

Senior Brian Kelly was named to the CHSCA All-State First Team Defense this week. Kelly tallied 71 tackles, two sacks, nice interceptions (four returned for touchdowns), 10 passes defended, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles to earn the recognition.

Senior offensive lineman Dion Koumoutseas was named to the first team offense in the Class M and senior linebacker Shea McGorty was named to the first team defense in the Class M.

Kelly was also named to the Hearst Connecticut Newspapers All-Star Football Defense first team while McGorty was named to the second team.
