Weekly BHS Sports Recap: Boys Indoor Track Takes Runner Up at Lindy Remigino Invitational

Hockey gets big rivalry win; Boys go 1-2, Girls 2-1 in BBall; Wrestling wins; as does Swim Team.

The Bobcats salvaged their week by getting a big win over SWC rival Joel Barlow at home Friday night. The boys had suffered two tough losses earlier in the week, falling on the road to Bunnell (3-5, 1-2) 68-51 and losing at home to Notre Dame-Fairfield (8-1, 3-0) .  Those two losses ended a modest three-game win streak. The win over Barlow pushed their record back to .500 and was the first in the SWC standings.

Junior Danny Burkhart led the team in scoring in all three games, going for 17, 20 and 19. Senior captain Nick Paez scored 17 points in the loss to Notre Dame and 16 points in the win over Barlow. Fellow senior captain Austin Yusko also had 16 points in the win over Barlow.

The team is on the road for two games next week, playing at New Milford on Tuesday and at Pomperaug (5-2, 2-1) on Friday.

Girls Basketball (7-3, 4-1):

The Lady Bobcats went 2-1 on the week, sandwiching wins over Bunnell (4-5, 2-4) and Joel Barlow (4-4, 0-4) around a loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield (5-4, 4-1). They took down the Lady Bulldogs at home Monday, came up on the short end of a 42-37 score at Notre Dame Tuesday and shutdown the Lady Falcons at Joel Barlow Friday.

Brookfield used shutdown defense in both of their wins. A balanced offensive attack carried them in the win over Bunnell with sophomore Paulina Harron leading the team with 12 points while three other players were in double figures. Senior Moe Vetter sparked the offense with three three-pointers in the win over Barlow, scoring 13 points in the game. Vetter also hit three three-pointers while scoring 12 points in the tough loss to Notre Dame.

The girls will be at home for two games this week, taking on New Milford Tuesday before playing in a marquee SWC matchup against Pomperaug (7-2, 2-1) on Friday.

Hockey (6-1, 1-0):

The Icecats hadn't played in 10 days before Saturday night's tilt against Watertown/Pomperaug (4-3, 1-1) at Taft-Mays Rink in Watertown and in the first period the rust showed. BBD fell behind 2-0 but completely turned the game around in the second period as they rallied for a .

Sophomore Trevor Kurjiaka tallied two second period goals, both being assisted by senior captain Andrew Creaturo to force a frantic third period. Despite facing heavy pressure from the Indians, the Icecats prevailed in large part due to the goaltending by sophomore Luiz Dibble. Dibble faced 31 shots, many from point blank range.

BBD has another slow week, as they won't play again until Saturday when they face Hall-Southington (2-5-1) at home in the Danbury Ice Arena.

Wrestling (5-3):

The Bobcat squad handled the Rebels on the mat at New Fairfield on Thursday using seven pins to gain a 54-21 victory.

Blaise Boulliane, Alex Neal, Jake Thuesen, Mike Delvalle, Jack McKeever, Ryan McManus and Shea McGorty all earned pins in the dominating win.

The team comes back home on Wednesday to try and continue their strong season when they face off against Oxford. They will also compete in the New Milford tournament on Saturday morning.

Boys Swimming & Diving (8-1, 5-1):

The Bobcats had two separate cross-town rivalry meets this week and they handled their business in both with ease. First up they took down Bethel at the Brookfield Dive Shop with a . Then, on an emotional night that doubled as a fundraiser for leukemia research in the name of  , who died of leukemia in 2002, Brookfield in every event against the Nighthawks in Newtown.

The boys have only one meet this week, a non-conference invitation against Cheshire and Sacred Heart to be held at Kennedy High School in Waterbury on Tuesday.

Indoor Track & Field:

The defending SWC Champion boys team placed second at the 68th Lindy Remigino Invitational held at the Bacon Field House on the Wesleyan University campus. With eight team members competing the Bobcats scored 44 points behind only Naugatuck High School's 54.

Senior captain Chris Ackell took second place in both the Shot Put and the Weight Throw. Ackell set a school record in the Shot with a throw of 50-09.75.

Senior Kirk Gardner took second place in Pole Vault and fifth place in the Triple Jump.

Seniors Sam Grainger and Tyler Appleby both placed well in the High Jump, with Grainger coming in second and Appleby coming in fifth.

Senior captain Spencer Mannion placed fifth in the 1,000 Meter Run, breaking the school record with a time of 2:38.67

Junior captain Colin Burke had a strong run in the 300 Meter Dash and a top 10 finish in the 600 Meter Run, while senior Dan McArdle was impressive in the 1,000 Meter Run.

The 4x400 Meter Relay team of Burke, Mannion, Ackell and senior Ryan Murphy placed third with a school record time of 3:40.71.

The boys team has already qualified numerous members for Class M State Championship competition:

Senior Kevin Peterson — 55 Meter Hurdles

Burke — 300 Meter Dash / 600 Meter Run

Mannion — 1,000 Meter Run / 1,600 Meter Run

Gardner — Pole Vault / High Jump

Appleyby, seniors Jack Gernert and Grainger, sophomore Manny Pascoa — High Jump

Ackell — Shot Put

The girls team did not score pints at the Invitational but they did have some strong individual performances.

The 4x400 Meter Relay team of sophomore Djenne Parris, senior captain Aileen Tobin, junior Alexandra Willey and senior Kristi Pino set a new school record with a tie of 4:38.96.

Parris had top 20 times in both the 55 Meter Dash and 300 Meter Dash.

Tobin placed seventh in the 1,000 Meter Run with a personal best time of 3:15.86.

Junior Wendi Westmark placed eighth in the Shot Put.

The girls team also has qualified numerous members for Class M State Championship competition:

Parris — 55 Meter Dash / 300 Meter Dash / 600 Meter Run

Tobin — 1,000 Meter Run

Junior Nicole Clayton — High Jump

Westmark — Shot Put

Both the boys and girls teams will compete at Wesleyan University again on Martin Luther King Day in the SWC Developmental.
