Kent Falls State Park

Take a scenic drive to a memorable hike at Kent Falls State Park.

Have you ever felt the mist of a waterfall on your face? Waded in a cool pool at the bottom? Kent Falls State Park offers just that. Visitors can wade in the water and splash under the rocky falls. And if that's not enough, climb to the top and soak in the breathtaking sights along the way from the many viewing decks nestled beside the falls. On your way up, you can see small caverns and patterns etched and carved into the side of the limestone.

For this hike, you'll have to start with a scenic drive. Take route 7 out of Brookfield through New Milford and Gaylordsville, past the historic Bulls Bridge and through the town of Kent. Keep going (it takes around 40 minutes total) and Kent Falls State Park will be on your right, just before reaching Cornwall. When in doubt, follow the motorcycles. This drive is a long-time favorite of bikers.

After parking, head for the covered bridge and up the hill towards the falls. Take the well marked path on the right of the falls and start climbing. Just when you think you must have reached the top, you'll find another step or two in the falls, another level, and another beautiful cascade of water.

The quarter walk up to the top of the falls is steep and could be difficult for young children, but is well worth the effort. On weekends and during the fall foliage viewing season it is likely to draw a small crowd. There is a longer hiking trail that weaves through the woods to the outer edges of the park, providing a peaceful, quiet hike that can also be steep in areas.

Yankee Magazine recently acknowledged what visitors and locals have always known, that there is something special about the small town of Kent and its quiet natural wonders. The magazine recently named Kent as the number one destination for viewing the fall foliage, beating out many famous and well known areas in northern New England. The towns were rated on visitor appeal and accommodations in addition to the spectacular views. Kent has much to offer, from beautiful country inns to antiques shops, art galleries and farm stands offering local produce.
