Brookfield 6th Grade Girls Win Big During the Holidays

Brookfield Travel Basketball wins Danbury Christmas Classic Tournament

The Brookfield Bombers sixth grade girls Travel Team celebrated the holiday season last week by winning the Danbury Christmas Classic Holiday Hoops Tournament with a resounding 37-26 victory over a strong Bethel team. The Bethel girls made a small run in the second half but the game was not as close as the score — due to a few Brookfield turnovers in the second half and some missed layups by Brookfield during the game.

Brookfield sealed the victory in the fourth period on the strong defense of Cara Lennon, Kaitlyn Farias, Amber Howe and Carly Consalvo, along with some key rebounds and baskets by Alexandra Fitzgerald, Lennon and Farias. Amber Howe played an absolutely stellar first half and she led all the scorers in the championship game, followed in scoring by Fitzgerald and Farias.

In the seeding rounds, the Brookfield girls went 3-1, dominating in their three wins by an average score of 38-10 against Danbury PAL, Ridgefield Travel and Southbury Travel. Again, the Brookfield team was led by the strong defense of Lennon, Farias, Howe and the rebounding and strong middle presence of Fitzgerald.

Sarah Egan, Abby McGrade, Erica Morey and Lindsey Zaleski also provided much key support and key plays in the win. Fitzgerald was also high scorer for the tournament.

Most of these girls have taken this tournament two years in a row now, as this was a rematch of the Championship game from the 2010 Danbury Classic Championship. Last year the Brookfield girls also beat Bethel Travel in the tournament championship — winning the fifth grade trophy in a closer-scored and harder-fought, last second victory.
