BBD Icecats Open Season with 3 Wins

Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury hockey starts the season strong before heading to JFK Arena this weekend.

The Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury Icecats got their season off to a fast start going 3-0 in CIAC hockey action prior to the Christmas break.

The Icecats opened with a come-from-behind 4-3 overtime thriller, winning on the road versus Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks before a large home crowd at the Enfield Twin Rinks. Senior co-captain Scott Martin netted the winner six minutes into sudden death after Trevor Kurjiaka had tied the score for BBD with two minutes left in regulation. Nick Rhode scored in the first period and Joe Britton the second for BBD, while co-captain Jordan Warren recorded a pair of assists and goalie Luiz Dibble stopped 25 shots to secure the win.

BBD followed that fine effort up with a strong, balanced offensive outing, winning 10-3 over Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug at the Gunnery in Washington. Ten different skaters scored Icecat goals while Chris Walker stopped 20 shots in goal for the 'Cats.

Game three turned out to be another overtime battle, with BBD topping the highly rated Amity Spartans 2-1 in the home opener at the Danbury Ice Arena. After two tightly defended scoreless periods Jon Leonard broke through assisted by Jordan Warren for a 1-0 Icecat lead, however a late Spartan steal and breakaway goal sent the game into OT. Two minutes in to the extra session John Vitti's one timer off a pass from Warren lit the lamp for the game winner. Luiz Dibble came up big in goal with another 25 save effort for the unbeaten Icecats.

BBD will travel to Rome, NY this weekend to play in the Rome Holiday Tournament at JFK Arena Friday and Saturday.
