Brookfield Voters Decide on Two Bond Requests Tuesday Totalling $3.4M

Residents asked to approve bonding for a series of capital projects and the second half of the Still River Greenway project.

Brookfield voters and property owners are asked to head to the polls Tuesday to decide on two bonding packages — one for six capital projects around town and another to complete Phase II of the Still River Greenway.

The first bond request on Tuesday’s ballot is for $1,037,000 for maintenance projects throughout town, including:

  • $69,000 for lighting, heating and bathroom renovations at Brookfield Library;
  • $120,000 for the air conditioning system in the Brookfield High School auditorium;
  • $180,000 to replace a backhoe for road maintenance;
  • $188,000 for HVAC, windows and carpeting in Town Hall (last of three-phase project);
  • $230,000 for a roof replacement and Commercial Kitchen renovation at the Center Fire Company station house; and
  • $250,000 for repairs to the parking lots at the library, town hall and town garage (Phase I of a 2-year, $500,000 program).

The second question being put to voters Tuesday asks them to approve $2,407,000 to finish work on the 2-mile Greenway that began with Phase I in 2010.

Though the resolution requests an appropriation of just over $2.4 million, 80 percent of the cost will be reimbursed through Department of Transportation grants, leaving the total cost to Brookfield residents at $481,400.

The final plans — once approved by voters and the Army Corps of Engineers — extend the paved walking/biking path from behind the police station south to Junction Road and north parallel to Route 202, terminating at 777 Federal Road.

Polls will be open Tuesday, June 24, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School (District I) and Brookfield High School (District II).
