Brookfield Man Charged on 14 Counts After Argument Turns Violent

Man arrested on litany of charges ranging from strangulation to risk of injury to a child to loitering on school grounds.

A Brookfield man was arrested on 14 charges Friday night after a physical altercation turned into a dangerous search-and-evade that ended in the parking lot at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School.

According to police, Daniel Mudgett, 33, of Horseshoe Drive, Brookfield, was involved in a verbal argument on Aug. 2 that became physical. During the fight, Mudgett allegedly tried to strangle the victim before fleeing the scene prior to police arrival.

Mudgett was later located in the nearby parking lot of Huckleberry Hill Elementary. According to the police report, Mudgett drove well over the posted speed limit without turning on his lights and also had a child in the vehicle who was not properly secured.

Police said he also failed to stop for officers who had their emergency lights and sirens activated.

Bond was set at $100,000 and Mudgett was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Aug. 5 on the following charges:

  • Disorderly conduct: fight/cause/capable of causing
  • Disobeying the signal of an officer (two counts)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while license under suspension
  • Failure to have lights lit
  • Speeding infraction
  • Failure to drive in proper lane (two counts)
  • Injury/Risk of injury to/impairing morals of children
  • Loitering on or about school grounds
  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to secure child with proper belt
  • Strangulation in the second degree
  • Unlawful restraint in the first degree
According to court records, Mudgett is currently on probation for an arrest made in 2008 on charges of burglary in the second degree, attempt to commit escape from custody and assault in the second degree.

His five-year probation is up for review on Aug. 30.
