Community Corner

Brookfield Leadership not a subject for meaningless banter

I am finding myself so deeply shaken and disturbed by the digital chatter regarding William Tinsley's background and history.  This is not a subject that should be used to showcase anyone's ability to ramble loquaciously on the Internet. We, as residents, have a very serious crisis on our hands....it is not funny. I'm really scared for our town.

As a community of Americans we are very lucky to have the right to select the people among us who will manage our town. This is a huge responsibility....the selection I mean. We decide who we want to hold all our money and supervise all the projects and all the spending. Then we put them in charge. We hand them all our money, our schools, our water, our roads, everything. It is a big decision who to give this power to.

I am disheartened by the failure of my neighbors to take that responsibility seriously. Choosing our local leaders is a responsibility that I equate nearly with raising children. It is the most fundamental responsibility of democracy and has the greatest and most immediate impact on the quality of our lives everyday.

If we had elected someone who was incompetent it would have been a shame, especially when we had competent candidates to choose from. But this is no longer about competence. We gave all our money, and  our triple A credit score to a man who stopped paying his own mortgage, a man whose creditors are repeatedly taking him to court to get him to pay his bills. In response to theft charges, he told us all that he has a vacation home in Vermont ....but he let the bank take away his family home here. What kind of man does that to his family to his community? If I were to choose a financial manger for my personal accounts, I would not choose one who declared bankruptcy and who has bill collectors after him. So why did Brookfield do that? And why do we think it is okay to chat about it on the Internet in the same way we chat about a public official who stole signs or about our neighbor's barking dog?

If you are having trouble grasping the grave severity of our situation or the urgent need to fix it before it is too late, click on this link and put in William Tinsley's name. It is just so disturbing. I have no idea what we should do, but I am certain that it needs to be much more than casually chatting about it on the Internet. We have a crisis on our hands and we need to respond to the crisis.
