Camping at Lime Rock Park

This past weekend, Sept 20-21, 52 parents and 61 Scouts from Pack 135 participated at the Annual Scout Day Campout at Lime Rock Park, which features world class racing. Scouts from all over Connecticut and western Massachusetts attend, but 135 is still one of the largest attending groups. Scouts camped out on the infield of the racetrack on Friday night and watched the racing on Saturday.

Mike Flynn, Campout Coordinator, made this a great event for seasoned campers as well as those who were new to camping. He oversaw camping events, shopped for the food staples and supplies and coordinated parents’ efforts to pitch in with tables, canopies, grills, fire pits, and all the supplies, making this a great experience for everyone. The scout campsite was set up with a hot kitchen and serving area, not too far away from our three glowing campfires surrounded by campers roasting marshmallows for smores. The scouts and siblings had a great time playing baseball, football, Frisbee, and a new favorite, “Zombie Apocalypse” (the “cool” name for flashlight tag) and racing their own bikes and scooters.

In the morning, after eggs, sausage, pancakes –  and hot chocolate and cowboy coffee – it was off to watch the races. There were great views of the track, with many of us gathering by the first set of S-curves just after the starting line. A walk through the pit area gave the boys a chance to see a variety of cars, from modified every day cars such as the VW Jettas to souped-up BMWs and Porsches – and even some open wheeled Indy-style racers. Some the campers were lucky enough to get a souvenir racecar tire.

Following the September Scouting theme of Cooperation, all the boys worked together to clean up our entire camp site in record time, a shining example of the Leave No Trace pledge!
