Review: Nimer's White Turkey Deli

A good stop on the way out to the lake

Most people who have launched a boat from Latins Cove in Brookfield have passed this deli, as I had, numerous times. And although its unique name stuck in my head, I had never been inside until last week.

Nimer's White Turkey Pantry, located on the corner of Nabby Road and Candlewood Lake Road, has a little bit of everything. Part convenience store and part deli, Nimer's is bustling with activity when the noon hour draws near. Even on a weekend when I visited, the small parking lot was filling up and a line forming as we were leaving with our bags of lunch goodies.

Inside, the deli has grocery items, shelves of snacks and candy, a coffee bar, lottery tickets and cases of cold drinks. There is also an ATM, which we used because Nimer's only accepts cash.

The small deli counter has a refrigerated case with a few types of cold salads, as well as hot specials offered each day.

There is no place to sit down inside, so we ordered our lunch to go. Among our choices were a few turkey sandwiches, some with cheese and others with lettuce and tomatoes, served on deli rolls. I ordered roast beef on rye with coleslaw and Russian or Thousand Island dressing. But I ended up with roast beef on rye with lettuce, mayo and mustard. The deli did not have coleslaw or either dressing.

Sandwiches range from $4.50 for rolls and wraps to $6 for sub sandwiches. And while paying, my husband remembered he had an old lottery ticket from several months ago. And when scanned, he was a winner. A $4 winner, that is.

Our sandwiches had a good amount of meat and were made on fresh rolls. If you are looking for the basics, Nimer's is the place to go. And service must be consistently good because a sign was posted celebrating 25 years of business and thanking the deli's loyal customers.

Other choices included the Italian Combo ($5.50), featuring capicola, salami, pepperoni and Provolone cheese, the American Combo ($5.50), with ham, bologna, salami and American cheese, as well as the standard deli combinations. Hot choices change daily and may include meatloaf, spicy chicken strips or pork roast.

Nimer's is open early, at 5 a.m., and has a limited breakfast menu of egg sandwiches, pastries, bagels and home fries. The deli also offers catering.

This spot is the perfect place to stop on the way out to the lake. Whether you are picking up lunch or just some supplies, the location and proximity to the boat launch make Nimer's convenient, especially on these hot summer days.
