Brookfield Band Wins 2nd Rumble @ The Room

Young local band bests others from around the tri-state area to take local music venue's top prize.

Last Saturday wrapped up the finals of "Rumble @ The Room 2," with a native Brookfield band coming out on top: Civil Pilots.

“They were the only CT band to make the finals. They were the only Brookfield band in the competition. They were the best band out a field of 25 bands from all over the tri-state area,” owner of Vern Nickerson said.

Lead vocalist and songwriter for the group Ben Morgan, a Brookfield High School (BHS) graduate and WestConn student, said they got together in October 2011, however he and drummer Sam Morgan, his brother, a BHS student, have been playing together for most of their lives.

The brothers met bassist Nick Hernandez, a BHS student, as fellow church parishioners and teamed up with guitarist and friend Marcos Orozco.

All four musicians are Christians, according to Ben Morgan, who said he “writes about everything, but I’m sure some of my faith comes through in my lyrics.”

That said, Morgan wouldn’t consider Civil Pilots a “Christian band.”

“It’s hard to fit us in a hole, but we’d be considered alternative, experimental rock,” he said, citing influences like MUTEMATH, Explosions in the Sky and Thrice.

The next Civil Pilots show will be on Saturday, May 26 with winners of and A Social State, from Scranton, PA.

“We’re trying to make it the first sold out show at The Room,” Morgan said.
