Brookfield Officers Under Criminal, Internal Investigations After 'Altercation' at Local Bar

Brookfield police are investigating a fight that included local officers and left at least one department employee injured.

Brookfield police are currently conducting a criminal and internal investigation into a reported “altercation” involving at least one off-duty officer at 189 Sports Café late last Thursday night.

According to Maj. Jay Purcell, an employee at 189 called police on Sept. 12 asking for a supervisor to come down to the bar.

The fight had already broken up before the call was made and most of those involved had left by the time the shift supervisor arrived, Purcell said. The officer spoke with people at the scene and called in the first official report at 1:28 a.m. (Sept. 13).

Purcell said one person affiliated with the police department (but off-duty at the time) reported an injury and that "there were officers involved" in the altercation but would not elaborate on the events or those involved while the two investigations are taking place.

Purcell did state that no weapons were brandished at any time during the altercation and no civilians were harmed, according to the investigation.

Brookfield Det. Michael O’Brien is looking into the incident to see if criminal charges are warranted and Purcell is leading the internal investigation to see if any of the department’s standards of conduct were violated.

“The potential here, at its most serious, is a misdemeanor charge,” Purcell said of possible criminal charges.

“We’re treating this just aw we would for any other incident,” he said. “The only difference here is we also have an internal investigation to see if any rules and regulations were broken.”

The results of both investigations are expected sometime next week.
