Sounds of the River

A reader writes about the anticipatory sounds of fishing the Housatonic.

I always heard the river before I could see it. I'd leave my truck by the old stone wall and cross down through the meadow, swinging my legs through knee-high hay and keeping a steady pace as I worked to hear what the river was promising. The Housatonic River is a tail-water, fed from a dam 10 miles upstream. The power company raises and lowers the river’s flow depending on power needs and the flow into the river from rain and run-off. If I heard the river early, say at the first break between the meadow and the corn field next to it, I could know the water was fast and high. I’d recheck to be sure I had my wading staff and begin to think about my first fly choice. Usually I’d want my special tan and olive streamer. If the sound came to me…

Impressive Seasons for Bobcats Wrestling Captains

Wrestling program needs numbers to develop.

The Brookfield Bobcats Wrestling team does not look formidable on paper; with one only win on the season after 16 meets. However, the team is lead by a strong core of wrestlers having standout seasons and a new head coach, who believes that, with time, the program has the potential to grow into a dynasty. “We have a talented team this year,” coach Mario Bonito said. “We’re winning a lot of tournaments but we’re struggling” at meets, with only one win on the season after 16 meets. The team’s problem, according to Bonito, is numbers. Brookfield’s wrestling team currently has 16 members, whereas a healthy team would have between 25 and 30 wrestlers, Bonito said. “We could win five to eight matches and still lose the meet,” he explained. “We’…

There is more to this story than just what these guys are doing on the mat which is impressive enough as it is. These seniors have shown that they are truly dedicated to the sport and to the Brookfield High School team. They continually give moral support and guidance to the younger wrestlers. They encourage each and every wrestler to be the best that they can be and they do it through positive …   more ›

Superbowl XLVI: Giants or Pats? [POLL]

Who do you want to win "The Rematch?"

After two closely contested and hard-fought conference championship games Sunday a pair of area teams came out on top and will square off for a chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. The New England Patriots will face the New York Giants in Superbowl XLVI on February 5 in Indianapolis. The game is a highly anticipated rematch of Superbowl XLII from 2008, where Big Blue edged the Pats in the game’s final seconds. Situated in New England, but just up the road from the Meadowlands, Brookfield is and has always been a battleground of NFL loyalties. So, share your thoughts, where does your allegiance lie? Who do you want to win the Superbowl?

The Snow is Finally Looking Good for Skiers

The season seems to have turned the corner in terms of conditions.

It seems as if the season has finally turned the corner.  "I think it has and the message we are trying to get out there is — come to the mountains because there is plenty of snow," Catamount Vice President Rich Edwards said on Friday. "The base depths are good now and they became good in a hurry." Temperatures have been cold enough overnight — generally in the mid-20s and below that — for snowmaking in the higher elevations for about two weeks.  Mother Nature has also been cooperating. A storm came through the Berkshires and into southern Vermont on Friday and dropped anywhere from 6 inches to a foot on the trails.  If you are thinking about heading out Sunday or Monday, here's a look at what is open within a three-hour drive from the …

Ban Long Boats on Candlewood? [Poll]

The DEEP wants to know what people think. Should the state ban boats 26 feet or longer? Take the poll.

The state DEEP is seeking comment on the idea of limiting the size of boats on Candlewood Lake. See related story. It might make enforcement work harder. Here is a chance for you to sound off. Take the poll and, if yes or no don't seem appropriate, add your own comments.

It's not the length of the boat, it's how you use it. I've seen much smaller boats than 26' (which represent the vast majority of watercraft on the lake) driving at excessive speeds, kicking up dangerous wakes, and generating louder engine noise levels than larger boats. The difference btwn a 25' and 27' is going to change that...really!?!.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: 'It Made Us All Proud to Represent Brookfield'

Brookfield Midget Football Team Sends its Thanks!

Our "once in a lifetime trip" to last year's ESPN/Walt Disney Worlds Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL became "twice in a lifetime" as our Midget Boys from Brookfield made the trip again to the 55th Annual Pop Warner Superbowl this year and came away the 2011 National Champions after a semifinal appearance last year as Jr. Midgets.  I would like to take this opportunity to Thank All of You for your tremendous support of these boys. Our road to the National Championship included victories over Pomperaug for the WCPW Championship, Stratford for the State Championship, Everett, MA and Mt. Washington, NH for the New England Championship and a 30-24 victory over East St. Louis, IL for The National Championship. But all of this would not have …

Brookfield 6th Grade Girls Win Big During the Holidays

Brookfield Travel Basketball wins Danbury Christmas Classic Tournament

The Brookfield Bombers sixth grade girls Travel Team celebrated the holiday season last week by winning the Danbury Christmas Classic Holiday Hoops Tournament with a resounding 37-26 victory over a strong Bethel team. The Bethel girls made a small run in the second half but the game was not as close as the score — due to a few Brookfield turnovers in the second half and some missed layups by Brookfield during the game. Brookfield sealed the victory in the fourth period on the strong defense of Cara Lennon, Kaitlyn Farias, Amber Howe and Carly Consalvo, along with some key rebounds and baskets by Alexandra Fitzgerald, Lennon and Farias. Amber Howe played an absolutely stellar first half and she led all the scorers in the championship game, …

The Bobcats have beaten the likes of Oxford, Joel Barlow (twice), East Longmeadow, MA, New Fairfield and Classical Magnet, with the one loss coming against a strong Immaculate team in the opening round of the Candlewood Classic tourney.
