Who are you rooting for to win the Super Bowl this year?
Hey football fans: Which "new" are you rooting for: New England or New York? In 2008's Super Bowl, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots played against each other and the Giants won. Do you think the outcome will be the same this year? Take our poll and share your sports talk in the comments section.

Everyone at the house I'm going to is rooting for the Giants this year, so I've decided to root for the Patriots to create friendly competition. :) So, Mr. Langlois - we'll see who's the victor this evening!   more ›
Serve up finger food for the big game day.
When it comes to celebrating Super Bowl Sunday, there are several ways to prepare. Some fans wear team jerseys for days, others use their bodies as canvases for their team's colors and still others send invitations to only like-minded friends to come watch the game. In our house, the only preparation we care about is the food. Game food can be tricky. You've got a bunch of people sitting on your furniture with a drink in one hand and a dip-slathered chip in the other while screaming at the television and making wild gestures. Although there may be spills and drips, there is a way to minimize the damage: make one-handed food. These ideas work well for a rowdy crowd and will please the men as well as the women in the group. Nothing says …

The why and how of tag sale-ing.
I found a friendly comment placed under last week’s article asking me the question for the ages: “Where do you go to find the good sales?” I have been doing this weekend treasure hunting for as long as I can remember. Actually, it all started with a parent teaching me to drive. What better place to practice parallel parking then among the row of cars at an estate sale. Of course, once successfully wedged between two cars, I had to go and take a look. My first lesson in successful treasure hunting: Randomness. As a dashing (writer’s embellishment) young lad of 16, I was immediately attracted to… beer; not the beverage, but the container, the label, the signs, the bottle openers. Collectors refer to this as “brewerina” and there are …

Have you payed homage to the most satisfying packing material of all time?
An Ode to Bubble Wrap Bubble wrap, you're really neat. The invention of you was quite a feat. Whenever children see a sheet, parents know they have a little retreat from wiping noses and making snacks, now that bubble wrap's got their back! But it's not just kids who love bubble wrap. Even the most serious adult's been known to tap a thumb against the bubble wrap, to hear that satisfying 'snap!' If you don't have any bubble wrap handy, here's a link to virtual bubble wrap. Once on the page, click on the underlined sentence, "Pop some virtual bubble wrap now." Did you know that popping bubble wrap is a stress relief technique? The corporate offices at Sealed Air, where bubble wrap is a trademarked brand, have stress relief boxes filled …
Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat...
When I woke up on Saturday, I knew it was not going to be the best day to find a “dig,” or possibly a blog post, or even an article. I had actually checked the night before to see if there were any sales in the area and was hopeful when I found a lone estate sale listed in Danbury. The snow had been falling since 3 a.m. and the prediction was for 3-6 inches, maybe more, maybe less. Looking out the window, I figured the day was lost to finding anything, except lower back pain from shoveling. My wife doesn’t drive in the snow, but cares about her clients, and when she asked for a ride to work, I thought, “What a team we make!” I could unwittingly protect her foolish desire to work and she could unwittingly satisfy my selfish desire to dig …

In the now distant past, I too loved a good estate sale. The thrill of the hunt would creep up on me every Saturday and Sunday as I would spy yard sales and even a muli-family jumble sale. But as my life became more complicated due to the addition of yet more children, my hunting days began to be far and few in between. Today they are but a memory. At least I can still enjoy them through your …   more ›
Selectman Howard Lasser's newsletter.
There is a Special Town Meeting, Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m. at the High School. The Board of Selectman, at their January meeting, requested the Board of Finance to appropriate $485,000 to pay the sewer assessment related to the sewer extension to the High School. The Board of Finance unanimously approved the request. Our Town Charter requires that a Town Meeting be called to approve an appropriation of this size. The funds will come from our Fund Balance (savings account). The appropriation is being sought now, rather than through the budget process because it is a one-time item and funding is available to cover this while we continue to maintain a fund balance in excess of the goal set by the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance. It…

Reader urges others to support proposed regulation banning large boats on Candlewood Lake.
In follow-up to recent articles questioning if large boats should be prohibited from Candlewood Lake, I would like to add my strong endorsement for the proposed rule that would set a maximum length of just less than 26’ for vessels plying Candlewood’s waters. Importantly, I would also urge all residents and boaters who share this view to contact the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to underscore this message with your reasoning before the 4 p.m. deadline this Friday, January 27. For your voice to count, the time to act is now. There has been much discussion over whether the Lake is overcrowded, ‘undersafe,’ and occupied by too many boats with too much power and girth. While the proposed rule will not (indeed cannot…

Each time this subject comes up, we hear that we "cannot" address all of the issues, the most important one being the NUMBER of boats. There is simply no reason this cannot and should not be be addressed.   more ›
