The Urban Archeologist: Good Santa – Bad Santa
Santa also knows if you've been using his image without permission...uh oh!
It was just a few months ago that I wrote about one of my top finds for 2013: a collection of clip files from artist/illustrator Bernard Burroughs. I am still reaping the benefits of that dig and Mr. Burroughs gets posthumous credit for this week’s article.
Part of the fun of collecting old paper is the way in which pop culture icons are depicted. Back in the 1940’s and 50’s, when Christmas advertising actually started closer to Christmas, there was a greater appeal to show the many faces of Santa.

You can see by the images that there was no better endorsement than Santa’s in your ad for anything from toasters to insurance. I don’t know who would write a policy for an elf that flies without a seatbelt, though he does seem beat the odds.
