Summer Destinations! 1913

Where was the nearest hotel to the train station in 1913, and would you need a Stage to get there?

I am lucky to have friends and family that not only tolerate my obsession for old paper, but feed into it. I like to think that my excitement for the papers of the past causes someone to think of me when they see something, “Greg would appreciate this.” It’s not often that a friend or associate will find and hold something for me to see, but when they do, it is a treat.

It was a real surprise when a co-worker recently granted me the opportunity to see several old samples of paper from the New Haven, Hartford, and New York Rail Lines. He had been digging through a family basement when he discovered items a relative had rescued from the dumpster. A neighbor was clearing out a parent’s house that had been a long-time railroad employee. Like many of us, he couldn’t stand to see it discarded and chose to rescue it.

One item he shared was is a very well preserved booklet referencing all the hotels and boarding houses, and all the resorts one can enjoy in Southern New England. A true promotional item for the company, its detail for the time is exacting.

The first few pages are descriptions of the geographical areas and their natural beauty: Watch Hill, RI, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, etc. There are numerous images throughout these pages of the locations, and then deeper inside are the resorts and hotels themselves. This was an AAA trip-tic for the rail traveler and a time-capsule treasure. See more images and continue reading the story here…
