Setting the stage to Austria in the late 1930's

Set construction is progressing for the Brookfield High School Curtain Players spring performance of THE SOUND OF MUSIC this coming March 20, 21, 22, & 23rd, 2014 at Brookfield High School.

Student and adult volunteers have been designing, measuring, cutting, assembling and painting a variety of backdrops and sets to help take the audience back in time to Austria in the late 1930’s.  Sets have been designed to include scenes that will take place at the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria, The Austrian mountainsides near the Abbey and various scenes in and around the Villa Trapp.

Theatrical set design creates the background mood and atmosphere that gives the actors a place to bring their characters to life and is therefore an important aspect of putting a production together. Lead set designer; Kyle Swift has worked on the last 12 consecutive BHS productions. “Kyle has done a tremendous job creating the sets for The Sound of Music and we are so grateful for his commitment to the Brookfield High School drama department” said John LaMendola, Artistic Director BHS Drama.

The Sound of Music revolves around Captain Georg Von Trapp, (played by Tim Peterson, BHS Senior) a wealthy widower, who runs his home near Salzburg, Austria like the ship he once commanded. That changes when Maria (Jessica Schwartz, BHS Senior) arrives from the convent to be the new governess of his seven children.

Their outings through the Austrian hillsides inspire all to sing and to find joy in the smallest things through music. Suddenly their world is turned upside down when the 1938 Anschluss of Austria occurs, when Nazi Germany takes control of the country. What happens to Captain Von Trapp, his children and Maria?
