A Penny for My Thoughts

I have had several different types of dogs over the years. Generally speaking, I chose bigger, active breeds. The 'herding' breeds, (Collies, Shepherds, and the small but energetic Corgis), have been my pals.

Now, just around the corner from senior hood, I have been researching the more laid-back breeds. Of course, I will RESCUE...from either a breed- specific rescue organization or a local shelter. One can often tell by knowing the breeds, just what a mix may carry, genetically. Some shelter personnel have become quite clever at identifying the origins of their fosters.

Mix breeds can be sounder of temperament and possibly healthier than the pure breds. And, there are too many animals in need of a home to even consider buying a pedigree.

Here is a list of the more easygoing breeds that I can consider, should I make this rather monumental commitment.

"Fetch!"        "No?"            "Alright, let's sit in the shade."

BULLDOG ~~ Medium-sized, strong and sturdy, these are not lap dogs. They are happy to be your companion, however...ever willing to relax by your side.

CHIHUAHUA ~~ Tiny, they can be a perfect city dog. Known to be a bit yappy, they like to feel that they are protecting their pack. They don't care for a 10 mile trek through the wilderness. (!)

SHIH TZU ~~ Intelligent and content to be lap dogs, they will happily join you for a daily, short walk.

PEKINGESE ~~ Independent and small of stature, they don't need a large yard. Regular brushing is a must for this long-coated breed.

PUG ~~ This is an adaptable breed...content in an apartment or surveying the estate. They can be silly and social.

BULL MASTIFF ~~ Generally speaking, this large breed doesn't require much exercise. They are powerful, gentle and suited for families.

CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL ~~ They tend to do well in both active and sedentary households. Often wonderful with children, they are also fairly easy to train.

FRENCH BULLDOG ~~ A great companion breed. They must be kept cool in the warm weather due to their flat, short faces.

When taking any animal into your home , one should have the time, the knowledge, the finances and the heart needed.

"All his life he tried to be a good person. Many times, however, he failed. For after all, he was only human. He wasn't a dog."
