Weekly BHS Sports Recap: Season Openers

The Fall Sports Season got underway with some strong performances and disappointing losses.

The Bobcats opened the season with a tough 21-13 loss against rival Newtown (1-0, 1-0) in a game played at Pomperaug High School. The Bobcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before costly mistakes led to them falling behind 21-7. They rallied to make it a one possesion game but couldn't put together a drive to tie in the fourh quarter.

Brookfield was led by tailback Leaon Gordon who rushed for 89 yards on  11 carries, scoring two touchdowns. They were sparked by sophomore quarterback Boeing Brown in the fourth quarter and wide receiver/quarterback/punt returner/placekicker/linebacker Brian Kelly.

The football team plays at home Friday against Immaculate (0-1, 0-1).

The Bobcats began life after the loss of former head coach Jared Sheikh and All-American striker A.J. Stueck with a season opening 4-1 home victory [see highlight video] against Weston (1-1, 1-1) before traveling to Joel Barlow (1-0-1, 1-0-1) where they played to a 3-3 draw.

They were led by seniors Collin Burke (2G, 1A), Austin Foulds (1G, 1A) and Nick Demo (1G, 1A) in the victory over the Trojans.  They rallied from being down 3-1 in the second half in the draw against the Falcons, with two more goals from Burke and Demo adding two assists and a goal .

The boys play at home against New Fairfield (1-1, 1-1) on Monday, on the road agianst Bunnel (1-0-1, 1-0-1) on Thursday and back at home Saturday morning against Kolbe Cathedral (0-2, 0-2).

Girls Soccer (1-0-1, 1-0-1):

The Lady Bobcats played to a 1-1 draw against Joel Barlow (1-0-1, 1-0-1) in their second game of the season, which was their home opener after they had scored a 1-0 victory on the road in the season opener versus Weston (0-1, 0-1).

Freshman Jen Millar scored the lone goal in the victory over the Lady Trojans. She was assisted on the goal by senior Maureen Vetter.  Sophomore Carly Cobbol scored on a corner kick and goaltender Vetter made 10 saves in the tie against the Lady Falcons.

The girls play at New Fairfield (2-0, 2-0) on Monday, at home Thursday against Bunnell (0-1, 0-1) and at Laurelton Hall (1-0, 1-0) on Saturday.

Field Hockey (0-2, 0-1):

The Lady Bobcats suffered two defeats to open the season, first losing 3-1 on the road against non-conference opponent Watertown (1-0).  They then lost 1-0 at home against SWC rival Immaculate (2-0, 2-0).  Alex Boschetto scored the goal in the loss to Watertown.

The girls play at home on Tuesday against Newtown and on the road against Lauralton Hall on Thursday.

Girls Volleyball (1-0):

The Lady Bobcats rallied for a thrilling 3-2 victory to open their season against Housatonic (0-2, 0-1) in the Brookfield High Big Gym. After falling behind 2-0 they stormed back by winning games three and four 25-20 and 25 -14 to set up a dramatic fifth game 15-13 win.

The team was led by Jamie Bickelhaupt, who had 14 kills, 10 digs, five aces and two blocks. Kathryn Marron added 13 kills, six digs and two blocks while Meghan Heron recorded 18 assists.

The girls are at home all week, playing Monday against Lauralton Hall, Wednesday against New Fairfield and Friday against Weston.

Boys Cross Country (3-0):

The boys team dominated its first meet of the year at home by placing 10 runners in the top 11 of the field. Spencer Mannion led all runners with a time of 16:59 and Dan McArdle was second with a time of 18:04.

Finishing fourth through 11th were Ben Lofink (18:04), Collin Lennon (18:40), Jack McKeaver (19:06), Adam Fox (19:07), Chris Peterson (19:20), Jacob Mayerson (19:24) and Tyler Mannion (19:31).

They defeated Immaculate 18, 45, Notre Dame-Fairfield 15, 150, and Kolbe Cathedral 15, 50.

The boys run at Newtown against the Nighthawks, Masuk and Weston on Tuesday and will compete in the Bethel Invitational on Saturday morning.

Girls Cross Country (1-1):

The girls team placed four runners in the top 10, but fell to Immaculate in their first meet of the year at home. The Lady Bobcats were led by sophomore Hannah Lyon, who placed fourth with a time of 22:31.

"I was very impressed with my sophomore leading the pack," girls cross country coach Beth Delaney said.

Following Lyon were captain Sam Carlucci with a time of 22:38 (fifth), captain Aileen Tobin with 22:42 (sixth) and Lily Maliszewski with 26:38 (ninth).

The team lost to Immaculate 21, 35, and beat Notre Dame-Fairfield 15, 50.

The girls are at Newtown against the Nighthawks, Masuk and Weston on Tuesday and will run in the Bethel Invitational on Saturday morning.

Girls Swimming and Diving (0-1):

The Lady Bobcats opened the season against Pomeperaug, the defending state champions, competing well but falling by a team score of 102, 81.

The team was led by their lone diver Sean McMullin, who took first place with a lifetime personal best score of 177.05.

Head coach Brandt Nigro feels that score will set her up well for the rest of the season and said it "gives the team a huge boost."

Sophomore Maddy Smart took first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:29.07 with teammate Megan Melville placing 2nd (5:34.54).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Sam Palicz, Smart, Melville and Steph Ferrarie took first place with a time of 1:46.42 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Megan Melville, Kalli Melville, Smart and Ferrarie also took first place with a time of 4:01.37.

"The girls are working so hard towards some pretty big goals," Nigro added.

They will swim this week at home (Western Connecticut State University) against Stratford and then in a duel meet at Weston Middle School on Friday.
