Softball Beats Masuk Again; Golf Teams Play Through Rain

Lady Bobcats down Monroe twice in one week and Boys Golf gets in half their games while the Girls look for their first win.

Softball (14-5, 11-3):

On Monday, the Lady Bobcats handed Masuk (15-4, 13-1) their first conference loss of the season with a 4-3 victory at home.  After spending the rest of the week trying to stay active through all the rain, the two teams were back at it on Friday in Monroe.  In a non-league game, Brookfield once again came out on top, beating the Lady Panthers 2-1.

"It was an important game because of the state tournament rankings," Brookfield head Frank Bonacci said.  "Our goal is to get into states when we start, we do that, now the goal is to get a home game.  This gives us 14 wins for the year and that should be plenty."

Brookfield came out swinging in the first inning, getting back-to-back base hits from Felicia Lennon and Wendi Westmark.  Giuliana D'Arcangelo drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Melissa Pierce followed with a run-producing double for the 2-0 lead.

"I was really happy the girls came out firing on all cylinders today," Bonacci said of his team that had to overcome being bored working out in the gym this week while the rain kept them off the playing field.  "We came out ready to play.  That's big, especially when you are the visitors.  Even if you put one run on it puts them behind the eight ball.  That means that they can't do some of the things they want to do."

The two run lead would be all starting pitcher Danielle DeMarco would need.  DeMarco scattered only three hits over her four innings while striking out five and surrendering zero runs for the win.

"She came into the gym yesterday and was ready," Bonacci said of DeMarco.  "She pitched good.  She's had some tough luck innings this year but she came back real well, I was very happy the way she pitched."

Brittany Fusek came on in relief in the fifth inning to finish the game.  She allowed the lone run of the game for Masuk in the sixth inning, where she was aided by a nice catch by reserve outfielder Dana Ferraro.  Fusek retired the side in order in the seventh inning, getting two strike outs for the save.

Boys Golf (8-4):

The rainy week made for some tough conditions on the links this week but the Bobcats were still able to get in two matches while two others were called off.

On Wednesday they played at the Oronoque Country Club against Bunnell and came away with a 186-195 victory. Even in the tough conditions, Steve McGorty and Dan Flood were able to put up decent scores, with McGorty shooting a 42 and Flood a 44.

On Thursday they played against Pomperuag, who has yet to lose a conference match all season.  The Panthers would remain undefeated by beating Brookfield on their home course 162-183.  McGorty again was the low man for the Bobcats with a round of 44.
