Lady Bobcats Defeat Morgan In Quarterfinals 48-45

Brookfield Girls Basketball Follow Star Martelle To A Tough Victory In Middletown

The Lady Bobcats had a tough start in Thursday's Quartfinal match against Morgan (9 seed).  A star performance from senior Brittany Martelle (#20) kept Brookfield (1) in the game and solid defense in the second half kept them ahead through to the buzzer, winning 48 to 45.

Morgan took the lead in the first minute and held it into the second quarter, until Martelle broke out with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Brookfield up 25 to 23.  Then, just to mark the end of Morgan's dominance, Martelle put down another 3 points before they could answer.

Brookfield went into halftime ahead, but hardly overconfident.  "It was a rough start, but we had a great comeback," Coach Maura Keenan said at the half.  Asked how they got there, Keenan said what everybody knew, "Three-point shots – all Martelle."

A good woman-to-woman defense, led by junior Jaime Bickelhaupt's (#32) incessant presence in the paint, kept Morgan at bay through most of the third quarter.  When they pulled ahead with two minutes left, Martelle took control of the game again, repeatedly driving the length of the court until they finished the quarter up 37 to 33.  Brookfield spread their lead as far as six; Morgan got as close as three, but never caught up again.

"We passed well and we're scrappy," Keenan said after the game.  Despite shooting 0 for 9 to start, the Lady Bobcats came back and fought the whole way through.  "Morgan didn't quit, they just kept coming," Keenan added, respectful of the Huskies, from Clinton, who ran a hard game and chased the Bobcats all the way to the buzzer.
