Girls LAX Handed Loss in State Quarters; Seasons Wrap for Track, Boys LAX, Girls Tennis

Boys Lacrosse out in first round, Girls Tennis season ends, Boys and Girls Track & Field compete at State Open.

Girls Lacrosse - Class M State Tournament

The Lady Bobcats season came to an end on Monday night in Madison.  No. 10 seeded Brookfield (11-8) traveled to take on No. 2 seed Daniel Hand (18-3) and they were unable to keep pace in the second half as they lost 19-8 in the quarterfinal round of the the Class M State tournament.

The Lady Bobcats had advanced to the quarters with a first round 21-12 win at No. 7 Ledyard on Thursday.  Senior Emily Leonard led the team in the win with seven goals and four assists.  Fellow senior Kathryn Marron added four goals and two assists while sophomore Jenna Bellano scored four goals.

In the loss to Daniel Hand, the Lady Bobcats trailed 10-6 at halftime but were outscored 9-2 in the second half.

The loss marked the end of the outstanding playing careers of both Leonard and Marron, who teamed up to be one of the most potent scoring combinations in the state the past two seasons.

The game was also the last for seniors Abby Aaron, Shannon Gruda, Kayla Ryan, Katy Serio and Kelsey Zimmerer.

Boys Lacrosse - Class M State Tournament

The Bobcats were shutdown in the first round of the Class M state tournament by No. 2 seed East Lyme (15-4).  Brookfield (8-10), the No. 15 seed, played on the road and were beaten 11-2.

The season was an up down one for the Bobcats, who during the regular season never had a losing streak of more than two games and never had a winning streak of more than two games.  They seemingly traded wins and losses throughout the year as they hovered around .500.

The final game marked the end of the athletic career for senior Brian Kelly, who is known more for his standout play in football.  It was also the final athletic event for senior Sam Grainger, who excelled as a high jumper during the indoor track & field season as well as being a team leader for the boys lacrosse team.

Girls Tennis - SWC & State Playoffs

The Lady Bobcats placed two singles players and one doubles team in the SWC individual tournament before the team competed in the qualifying round of the Class M torunament.

Junior Rebecca Vulcano lost 8-2 to Newtown's Lauren Frazetta in the qualifying round.

Sophomore Jess Becker was defeated by Newtown's Mia Terracino 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

The seniors doubles team of Kerri Lally and Kristie Pino were defeated 8-4 by the Newtown doubles team of Julia Fratteoli and Meghan Loose 8-4 in the qualifying round.

In state tournament competition, Brookfield was seeded 23rd and they took on the No. 10 seed Nonnewaug.  Playing at RHAM, who would take on the winner, the Lady Bobcats gave the higher seed all they could handle in a qualifying round 4-3 loss.

Track & Field - State Open

Senior Christopher Ackell qualified for the New England Open by taking the runner-up trophy in the Discus Throw on Monday at the State Open held at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.  Ackell also finished eighth in the Shot Put and 11th in the Javelin Throw.

Senior Spencer Mannion competed for the final time for Brookfield as he was unable to qualify for the New England Open.  Mannion finished one spot out of qualifying with a seventh place finish in the 1600 Meter Run.  He also placed 18th in the 800 Meter Run.

Other seniors who completed their careers were Tyler Appleby and Jack Gernert, who finished tied for ninth in the High Jump, and Alex Van Hoof, who placed 15th in the Discus Throw.

Seniors Ryan Murphy and Kevin Peterson were part of the boys 4x400 Relay team that finished in 17th place.  Juniors Colin Burke, Noah Adams, Leaon Gordon and Kyle Weise rounded out the team that included two alternates.

Sophomore Djenne Parris competed in the 100 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash.  She failed to qualify for the finals in the 100, finishing in 13th place in the preliminary round.  In the 200, Parris placed 12th in the finals.

Sophomore Angela Berardi came in 10th in the Javelin Throw while junior Nicole Clayton registered no height in the High Jump.
