Busy Week for BBD as Icecats Sweep 3

Icecats win three before final game of regular season.

The Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury (BBD) Icecats came through an NHL-like stretch winning three games in four nights last week, improving their record to 13-5-1 and climbing to second in the CIAC state D2 rankings.

The action started Tuesday when the 'Cats traveled to Stamford to take on Trinity Catholic. BBD prevailed 2-1 as Matt Hallock's unassisted slapshot provided an early 1-0 lead and Daivon Ruggiero netted the game winner midway through the third period. Hallock and Jordan Warren assisted and goalie Luiz Dibble saved 24 shots to keep Trinity at bay.

The Icecats returned home to celebrate senior night Wednesday at the Danbury Ice Arena with a 2-1 win over New Fairfield-Immaculate (NFI). With an all senior starting line-up of forwards John Cueva, Chris Swift and Richie Eyman, defensemen Billy Hunt and Jake Maddox, and goalie Chris Walker, it was junior Steve Almeida whose second period goal broke a scoreless tie, assisted by Will Lawrence and Joe Britton.

After NFI tied it up 1-1 in the third, senior Matt Hallock fought through traffic to light the lamp assisted by Brennan Battochio. Dibble finished in net and fellow seniors Scott Martin, Trevor Kurjiaka, Warren and Jon Leonard contributed prominently to the win.  

The week's action concluded for BBD Friday with a hard fought 4-2 SWC win over a very physical Masuk team. First period goals by Kurjiaka and Hallock assisted by Hunt and Martin gave the Icecats a 2-0 lead. Britton's lefty wrister assisted by Hunt and Lawrence, and Leonard's power play goal assisted by Kurjiaka and Warren rounded out the BBD scoring. Goalie Chris Walker stopped 22 Masuk shots for the Icecats who will close the regular season Tuesday at Milford.
