Brookfield SportsBeat: Lax All-Americans and More

Several players from the area earn All-American honors.

It's Final Four weekend in NCAA lacrosse and a couple of players from the area will have an extra bounce in their steps when they take the field. , a Westport resident who attended , was named first team All-American by United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The senior currently leads Duke in scoring with 38 goals. Last week against Colgate in the NCAA tournament, Rotanz scored a career-best five goals.

Joining Rotanz on the first team is of New Fairfield. Duke's long stick midfielder was a third team All-American in both 2010 and 2011 and earned honorable mention honors after his freshman season. Costabile, who scored the game-winning goal in the national championship game in 2010, had six goals and 4 assists this season. He is a groundball machine, averaging just over seven a game. Costabile's 386 groundballs are the most in the history of Duke's lacrosse program. Duke faces off against Maryland in the Final Four on Saturday in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Eric Parnon (Darien) and Dan Noskin (Greenwich) will be playing for the Terps.

The other Final Four match-up pits Notre Dame against Loyola (MD) and brother against brother. Devon Dobson is a senior from New Fairfield who plays for the Fighting Irish. His younger brother, Phil, is a junior midfielder for Loyola. Should be interesting.

Playing in goal for Loyola will be Jack Runkel, a Fairfield resident who prepped at . Runkel has been brilliant between the pipes this season, posting a 14-1 record with a .535 save percentage. Alex Yackery and Justin Shaw, both from Darien, are also on Loyola's roster.

graduate Brent Adams earned third team All-American honors. The senior at was second on the Stags in scoring with 25 goals and 13 assists in 16 games. Goalie Charlie Cipriano garnered honorable mention All-American honors.

Jeff Ledwick, a graduate, earned All-American honorable mention after his senior season at Colgate. The midfielder was third on the team in scoring with 32 goals and 15 assists.

Under Armour All-American Teams Announced

Several high school lacrosse players from the area have been selected to play in the Under Armour All-American Classic on June 30 in Towson, Maryland. Earning spots on the North team include:

Ian Ardrey (Greenwich). The senior attackman who attends Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts earned a spot on the team after a spectacular season. Ardrey will attend Harvard in the Fall.

Case Matheis () Regarded as the best high school player in the country, didn't disappoint anyone during his senior season. The Duke-bound player scored 51 goals and added 38 assists for the Blue Wave.

Henry West (Darien) West had a great season for the Blue Wave, scoring 36 goals while dishing out 44 assists. He will attend Cornell in the Fall.

Tony Britton (Darien) A vastly talented defenseman, Britton will play in the All-American Classic after turning in a solid performance during his senior year. Britton will attend Cornell along with West.

In high school action, plays for the FCIAC lacrosse championship for the first time since 2003. The Rams, who have won 12 consecutive games, battle Ridgefield on Friday at Brien McMahon High School. New Canaan beat the Tigers 10-5 just two weeks ago.

Ashley Guillette of continues to shine for the Tigers. On Wednesday, the freshman ace went the distance in a 1-0 victory over New Milford in the SWC quarterfinals. She struck out 16 hitters and gave up just one hit. And oh, yeah, Guillette also went 3-for-4 and drove in the game's only run.

who was named 2011's Triathlete of the Year, started 2012 off in spectacular fashion. He won the Harryman Olympic distance  triathlon on May 19 in New York with a time of 2:15:22.

Down On The Farm

hit a three-run home run in Wednesday's 16-4 win over Lake County. Casali is playing for West Michigan, the Detroit Tigers' single-A affiliate in the Midwest League. The home run was the fourth of the year for Casali. He went 2-for-3 to raise his average to .280.

of Orange turned in his best performance of the season on May 15. The graduate and fourth-round pick fo the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim went nine innings against Lake Elsinore of the Texas League, but did not figure in the decision. Russell gave up just five hits while allowing just one run, which was unearned. For the season, Russell is 2-4 with a 4.50.

Fellow Amity High School grad, , is starting to warm up after a slow start. Playing for Del Marva, the Baltimore Orioles entry in the South Atlantic League, Esposito is hitting .262 over his last 10 games. Espositio, a second-round pick of the Orioles in 2011, is hitting .257 with one home run and 18 RBI's for the year.
