Brookfield Lacrosse Club Hosts Girls LAX Event

BLC 1st Annual Girls LAX Event Held At BHS

A chilly morning gave way to warm spring-like weather in the afternoon as another lacrosse tournament was taking place at Brookfield High School on Sunday, April 11.  The BHS athletic fields were filled with players as the Brookfield Lacrosse Club hosted its 1st Annual Girls LAX Fest on Sunday.

Three fields were in use all day as the round-robin tournament featured games played between 7th and 8th grade "seniors" in the morning, 5th and 6th grade "juniors" and 3rd and 4th grade "bantams" in the afternoon.

The seniors and juniors played on the stadium turf and back turf while the bantams played on the small practice field.  Fortunately, the small field was in good condition after having been flooded out in recent weeks due to heavy rains.

With this being the first girls' event, BLC president Kevin Madden said it was a little difficult to find teams to register.  Ultimately they did a lot of promoting and were able to get 22 teams from nine towns to fill up the event.  He estimated that up to 400 kids were in action throughout the day.

Players from Brookfield, Newtown, New Milford, New Fairfield, Southbury, Ridgefield, Weston, New Canaan and Norwalk could be seen seemingly everywhere throughout the day.

Much like the boys Ice Breaker event, the action was fast and furious with games being played on a 25-minute running clock with a five-minute break between each match.  The competition wasn't as high as in the boys' event and there were no championship trophies handed out.

Between games music was pumped through the sound-system so players could dance their way from field to field.  BLC supporters could also be seen getting down up on top of the booster barn to the blaring beats.

The BLC had a vendor table set-up with plenty of t-shirts, sweatshirts and other gear available.  Club members and BHS Girls Lacrosse players were running the table. Sponsors Rap Stix and The Edge Performance Training were there as well.

More club members were running the concession stand at the booster barn and manning the grill.  Homemade food was abound and luckily for everyone, David "The Prince Of Pulled Pork" George was there offering up his killer sandwiches which were served on delicious rolls from Andrea's Pastry Shop in Newtown.

Overall the day was a complete success as parents were able to relax on lawn chairs and in the bleachers while the fun games took place on the fields.  The BLC hopes to expand the event to a full two-day tournament, raising the competition level next year now that they have broken the ice on this first girls event.
