Bobcats Pin Bethel 42-36 on Senior Night

Bobcats roll to victory behind seven pins.

The Brookfield Bobcats wrestling team squared off with the Bethel Wildcats on Tuesday night at Brookfield High School (BHS). The Bobcats honored their six seniors before the match and Coach Hayes felt their performance honored their seniors.

“They wrestled really well," he said. "When you get pins, and you score 42 points that’s a good job. Anytime you score 42 points you can’t lose.”

Bethel got off to an early lead in the first match of the night in the 103 pound weight class. Bethel’s Logan Whalton Pane pinned Connor Stascavage in 29 seconds to give Bethel a 6-0 lead.

At 112 pounds, Dimitri Hatzi defeated Brookfield’s Steven Delvalle by a score of 18-6 . Hatzi scored points on seven takedowns and two reversals. Delvalle scored his points off of six escapes.

In the 119 pound class, Griffin Barbieri scored the first points of the match for the Bobcats, by pinning Bethel’s Kyle Klein at the 1:29 mark. This was the first of Brookfield’s seven pins on the night.

“Griffin going out and winning was a good match,” said Hayes.

In the 125 pound class Brookfield’s Kyle Wauishuk was pinned by A.J. Klein in 1:14. Klein scored a two-point takedown before pinning Waurishuk. Klein’s pin gave Bethel a 16-6 lead.

Brookfield’s Blaise Boulliane would start a streak of three consecutive pins by the Bobcats, making quick work of Bethel’s Masudur Bhuiyan in 1:13 in the 130 pound class.

Senior Mike Delvalle continued where Boulliane left off by pinning Cody Ramirez in just 30 seconds in the 135 pound match. Delvalle gave Brookfield an 18-16 lead, and they would not trail for the rest of the meet.

In the 140 pound class, Brookfield’s Jack McKeever put up a quick seven points on Bryan Rodriguez with a takedown and two near falls. He went on to pin Rodriguez at the 1:17 mark of the match.

At 145 pounds, Brookfield senior Mike Schirmer drew a tough opponent in Will Bonagura. Schirmer gave Bonagura all he had but ended up on the wrong end of a technical fall. Bonagura scored points on four near falls, a take down and a reversal.

“Schirmer, it was a tough loss for him, but he went up against their best wrestler and he didn’t get pinned. So it was a positive,” Coach Hayes said.

Brookfield’s Ryan McManus and Bethel’s Jon Cole went the entire six minutes in the 152 pound class. McManus scored points in the first and second periods with two reversals to give him four points for the match. Cole scored a takedown and a reversal in the first period and an escape in both the second and third periods to score six points for the match.

Bethel’s Marc Ruiz pinned the Bobcats’ Kirk Lauri in 1:03 to win the 160 pound match.

The 171 pound match was a hard fought victory for Brookfield’s Shea McGorty over A.J. Polaski. McGorty scored two points with a takedown in the first period and two points in the second period with a reversal. He went on to win the match with a pin at 5:28.

“McGorty had a big win for us," Hayes said. "It was a tough match, but he pinned the guy in the end."

At 189 pounds, Brookfield’s Joel Wamser pinned Kevin Horan in 20 seconds to give the Bobcats a 36-30 lead in the meet.

Alex Van Hoof competed at the 215 pound class against Brandon Schmitt of Bethel. Van Hoof took a 2-0 lead into the second period and, after scoring a reversal, he went on to pin Schmitt in the second period at 2:16.

Bethel’s Chris Valenti did not have a competitor from Brookfield in the 285 pound class and scored points for Bethel by forfeit.

Coach Hayes explained how some of the matches for Brookfield were more challenging as a result of having to send their wrestler out to the mat first.

“We lost the flip, that messed us up and we had to send our wrestler out first," he explained. "If I could have flipped Wamser and Van Hoof they would have been easier matches for both of them."

Although it didn’t matter as the Bobcats pinned both of their opponents.

Coach Hayes recognized that winning on senior night was important, but he was without the catalyst of his team, senior captain Alex Neal.

“It was nice to win on senior night. We missed Alex Neal, but it was nice that he got his 100 wins trophy.”

The Bobcats will host the SWC tournament coming up on Friday and Saturday at BHS.
