Bobcats CIAC Opener Postponed to Saturday; Lady Bobcats Play Friday

Soccer teams play for SWC titles Friday and Saturday.

After Tuesday night's epic SWC title match with Joel Barlow went the Falcons’ way in penalty kicks, the Brookfield High School (BHS) boys soccer team (No. 13, 9-1-6/11-2-6) were ready to begin their quest for the state class M championship Thursday at home against Plainfield (No. 20, 8-4-4). That game has been postponed due to snow and will now be played Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brookfield Stadium.

The No. 16 Lady Bobcats (6-5-4) are scheduled to host the No. 17 Woodstock Academy (8-7-1) Friday at 3 p.m.

In the SWC semis and finals the Bobcats played 180 minutes of relentless shutout team defense. First, on Sunday night in Southbury against Pomperaug, Jon Leonard's header for a late first-half goal was all the offense needed, as goalkeeper Austin DaCunha kept a clean sheet with 7 saves for a 1-0 Bobcat win.

Then, in Tuesday night's final played at Newtown, the D came through again holding the speedy Falcons scoreless through regulation plus 20 minutes of golden goal overtime.

Brookfield then matched undefeated Barlow through two rounds of penalty kicks (7-7) before coming up just short in the third to fall 10-8. Mike Goulart, Altin Celaj, DaCunha, A.J. Sussingham, Wyatt Hathaway, Tom Walker, Billy Hunt and Kevin O'Shea scored the PKs for the Bobcats, who will now focus their attention on reclaiming the state title they last won in 2009.
