Baseball, Softball Both Clinch States; Plus: Boys Tennis, Golf

Boys Golf wins one of two, Boys tennis defeated.

Baseball (8-4, 5-2):

On Tuesday, the Bobcats were backed by a grand slam by sophomore Casey Burdick in a 9-1 win at Oxford (6-6, 2-6) that clinched a berth in the state playoffs. On Thursday, Brookfield fell behind by eight runs before scoring eight to tie the score but were unable to complete the thrilling comeback in a 9-8 loss at Immaculate (6-5, 5-3).

Senior pitcher Ryan Berry pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out nine in the win over Oxford. Berry added an RBI single to help his cause while senior captain Evan Mozingo and sophomore Tre' Gause both had two hits and a run scored.

Softball (9-4, 7-3):

The Lady Bobcats completed a perfect 4-0 week by winning a rare double-header on Thursday. They made quick work of the Lady Mustangs at Immaculate in a shortened 17-0 five inning game before racing home to pound Weston 16-0 in another shortened five-inning game. Those wins followed a five-inning 14-0 white washing of Oxford (4-7) on the road on Tuesday.

The current win streak has propelled them into a state playoff berth.

Brittany Fusek picked up two of the wins while Danielle DeMarco got her first win of the season on the mound. Fusek had a combined 15 strikeouts in her wins while DeMarco racked up 10. DeMarco also pounded a home run and had three runs batted in in her victory.

Candace Cobuzzi had a home run and four RBIs in the win over Immaculate and Melissa Pierce had a home run and two RBIs in the win over Weston.

The Bobcats had a strong round in a 165-175 win over Bunnell (1-5, 1-3) at home on Tuesday but struggled through a 175-181 loss in New Milford (2-7, 2-5) on Thursday.

Dan Flood led the team with a low-score of 39 in the win over the Bulldogs while Scott Martin shot a team-best 44 in the loss to the Green Wave.
