Whisconier Students Participate in 'Hour of Code'

Brookfield middle school students show their 21st Century Skills in international movement.

21st Century Skills students at Whisconier Middle School (WMS) participated in the international "Hour of Code" along with over 9 million other students in 167 countries.

The movement was started by Code.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to making computer science education more available in schools.

Among its champions are some of the biggest names in the computer industry including Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, as well as basketball star Chris Bosh and musician Will.i.am.

Code.org and its supporters have set up tutorials for all levels and devices (including paper and pencil), so that students can create their own programs.

The 21st Century Skills students in grade 5-8 at WMS working on their Chromebooks have helped move Angry Birds, created animated holiday cards, solved drawing puzzles and rescued spacemen.

Sixth grader Molly Clancy thought it was fun because, "you got to use your imagination." Fellow 6th grader Emma Hasselmann enjoyed putting herself into the puzzle to figure it out.

“All in all, it was an exciting week,” WMS 21st Century Skills teacher Sue Crean said.
