Record Number of National Merit Scholars

A record 19 students from Brookfield High School won the prestigious honor this year.

Brookfield High School's (BHS) National Merit Scholars were recognized and celebrated this week at the Board of Education's monthly meeting.

BHS Principal Dr. Brian Luizzi presented a record 19 winners, pointing out that these students are leaders in their school community, in addition to being talented academic achievers. They are leaders in school and community programs, some are athletes or musicians, making the point that these students are very well rounded.  Brookfield High School typically has five to 10 National Merit Scholars, with 10 being the highest on record.

The students introduced themselves and answered a variety of questions from the Board about their plans for the future and their experiences as Brookfield students. They were optimistic when discussing their future college career plans and graciously thanked their teachers for their dedication and guidance.

"I feel very well prepared," said Kevin Hoogenboom, who serves as a peer counselor. Hoogenboom took the lead in planning the recent Breakfast for Haiti fundraiser at BHS. The student organized event successfully raised $3,200 for Haiti by serving breakfast to over 400 people.

"I think Brookfield High School has prepared me and challenged me," said Victoria Townsend. She is also a performing member of the Brookfield Curtain Players where she serves as the club's treasurer.

National Merit Scholars are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments in high school and their potential for success in a rigorous college program of study. In order to qualify, applicants must complete detailed applications, including an essay that demonstrates leadership in community and school activities, an outstanding academic record and teacher and principal endorsements.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) holds annual competitions for recognition and undergraduate scholarships. The goal of the NMSC is to "identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students, to stimulate increased support for their education and to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships."

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955. Since then, they have recognized 3 million students and awarded $1.3 billion in scholarships.
