Photo Album: First Day of School

School is back is session today for Brookfield Public School students.

Waiting patiently at bus stops across town today, Brookfield students and their parents chatted about the summer past and about the year ahead. Some kids waited with nervous smiles, while others bounced with excitement as they boarded the new buses and were greeted by their bus driver.

"What teacher do you have?" was the question of the day for elementary students, as friends hoped they were together and parents gave a thumbs-up rating to their favorite teachers.

All students headed to school at their regular start time, with the exception of the Kindergarten class at Center Elementary School (CES). The district's youngest students arrived on a staggered schedule this morning to meet their teachers, new classmates, visit their classroom and tour the library, cafeteria and gym. Principal Carrie Kilian greeted the new students and parents introducing them to the staff and welcoming them to CES.

Finally, the moment they had been waiting for arrived: a test ride on the school bus with mom or dad by their side, through the neighborhoods surrounding the school. The Kindergarten students will ride the buses to CES on their own tomorrow morning, where staff will meet them at the bus with a smile and direct them to the gym, where they will join their classes for their first "real" day of school.

Today marks a new beginning for the revamped three-tiered bus schedule, which caused just a little confusion at one bus stop this morning, when a van marked for Huckleberry Hill Elementary School (HHES) almost picked up kids waiting for a different, larger HHES bus. At least one bus heading to HHES was significantly late, as spotted heading up route 35 at 8:50 a.m.

Parents were patient this afternoon as buses ran as much as 45 minutes late from Whisconier Middle School (WMS), HHES and CES. It is expected that there will be some delays and confusion during the first week of school as the new bus company sorts out any problems with the new bus routes.

With the first day of school behind them, students happily returned home to enjoy the remainder of a beautiful summer day.
