Newsweek: BHS Makes Top 500 Schools

Brookfield High School included in list of America's top schools.

Newsweek recently posted their list of the Top 500 High Schools in America, with Brookfield coming in at number 273.

Brookfield High School (BHS) ranked fourth among schools in Connecticut, coming in behind Wilton (141), Lyme-Old Lyme (202) and Daniel Hand (231).

Schools were issued a ranking based on six criteria: graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), AP tests taken per graduate (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent) and AP courses offered (5 percent).

The methodology was developed by Newsweek’s “panel of experts” — Wendy Kopp of Teach For America, Tom Vander Ark of Open Education Solutions (formerly executive director for education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford professor of education and founder of the School Redesign Network.

According to the article, the weighting system “reflects a school’s success turning out college-ready (and life-ready) students.”
