Huckleberry Students Visit the Capitol

Fourth grade students learn about state government and history.

Fourth grade students at (HHES) had an enriching experience when they visited the state Capitol in Hartford last month. The trip was an extension of the fourth grade government curriculum and supported the school district's Schoolwide Enrichment program.

Over the course of the day, students explored the Capitol, toured the museum and visited the House of Representatives and the Senate inside the Capitol building. The students learned all about the different parts of Connecticut’s state government and how the government operates.

Inside the museum, the students heard about Connecticut’s history, saw many different symbols that represent Connecticut and discovered statues of famous former Connecticut residents such as Nathan Hale and Prudence Crandall. The students also learned about famous devices that were invented in Connecticut, such as the typewriter.

One of the most important things the students learned about was the voting machine. They viewed an actual voting machine and discussed the importance of every citizen exercising his/her right to vote.
