Facebook Page Supports Armed Officers at Brookfield Schools

Facebook users are gathering on a new page to lobby for School Resource Officers at each school.

The day before the Board of Education (BOE) recommended that the town hire four police officers to be stationed at Brookfield schools, a Facebook page was created by Board of Finance (BOF) member Robin Appleby urging the town to give the idea serious consideration.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 90 residents have “liked” the page in support.

Appleby describes the purpose of his group:

I think the time has come to consider having an armed, uniformed police officer at the entrance to our schools, with a marked police car by the entrance.

Abbott Tech has a uniformed, armed State Trooper with the police car at the entrance.

I would like to have well trained, young officers who are empathetic and can bond with the kids. In Danbury, I hear good stories from the kids about the support they got from the officers during hard family times, abuse, even rape. I think that if done correctly, it might have a very positive effect on the drug and alcohol scene.

The most important job of government is protecting the citizens, esp. the young ones. It is unfortunate that our society has so many very disturbed psychopaths (we can discuss the reasons later).

For those who don’t know me well, I delivered precious little babies for 26 years (days and mostly nights). I raised 6 children and have sweet 4- and 6-year-old grandchildren living with me now. My church lost 4 little children.

I have talked to several dozen people and they were all favorable to this idea. These killers are cowards and would most likely seek a "softer" target.

I would like your opinions on this.

Thank you and God Bless you all Dr. Robin Appleby.

Way to go Brookfield residents and BOE! School Resource Officers (SRO's) offer an excellent added form of security, as well as practical and much needed in-school safety programs to keep our children safe. SRO's offer indepth anti: e-crime, drugs and violence programs, which unfortunately are much needed, even here in Brookfield. Let's join Redding, Fairfield, Monroe, Danbury, New Canaan and Ridgefield and give our schools a leg up on security and safety. A 1% town budget increase is well worth the value of SRO's in all of our schools.

Dr. Appleby I do not understand. You said if we staff the a schools with SRO's the killers would choose a "softer" target. Why is it ok if the killing takes place somewhere else? Wouldn't better solution would be to ban the type of weapons that are used to break in and cause mass devastation in a very short amount of time?

Don't see why we need to hire more officers - do a 1 year trial with what we have, which is more than most other towns: Ridgefield =8,872 households / 41 officers = 1 per 216 HH New Fairfield = 4,842 households / 13 officers = 1 per 372 HH Brookfield = 6,106 households / 32 officers = 1 per 191 HH Spend the savings on school psychologists, the kids will need them to explain why there are always armed police at their school watching them.

Please, I have yet to meet a school psychologist worthy of working in schools. In fact I know of one psych who worked for Brookfield school system which I called at home after school hours about a female student that was suicidal and she told me to call her at school during school hours!

Dr. Appleby, I have yet to see any changes that you pronounced in your campaign to be elected to the BOF. Thank you for delivering all of the babies and giving your home to your grandchildren. Everyone is over-reacting to Sandy Hook. Ask the Police Chief. We all become experts on what to do. The Chief led the FBI's behavioral unit and has a great grasp on situation. We are lucky to have a level headed person in the job. Let's go on his recommendation.

You are absolutely, correct!!!! Banning guns is the obvious solution!!! However, that will take many, many generations, do we have that kind of time? We have policeofficers in our town, having them at our schools would cut down on the response time ...

No chance a psychologist in school 1. notices anything wrong with any true at risk student 2. produces anything near effective results 3. no kid willingly goes to, or opens up to school shrinks for accurate evaluation.

Over-reacting to Sandy Hook? !!!! Are you aware of the fact that 20 children were massacred on Dec. 14th in our neighboring town??!!!! We must take action!!!!!! We must protect our students and educators. Are you aware of the FACT that a School Resource Officer just saved lives at Price Middle School in Atlanta yesterday?! Common Sense!
