CES Plans Walk for Diabetes

Help Center Elementary students and teachers raise $2,000 for diabetes research.

Students and staff from Center Elementary School (CES) are committed to helping to find a cure for diabetes. On March 22, 2011, approximately 400 students and faculty will join together to walk all over diabetes by participating in the American Diabetes Association’s School Walk for Diabetes.

“Our school community will be walking to show our support for our four classmates who have Type I diabetes and for our family and friends who have lives affected by diabetes,” Beth O’Connor, the school nurse at CES, said. “School Walk also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about making healthy choices to prevent Type II diabetes. The American Diabetes Association will come do kick off assembly on March 7, then we will be fund raising until our School Walk on March 22.”

More than 23.6 million children and adults in America have diabetes and one in three babies born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Funds raised during the School Walk for Diabetes campaign from March 7 through March 22 will help further the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Throughout the School Walk for Diabetes program, students will learn more about diabetes and their own health choices. During the month of March, students will learn the importance of making healthy food choices and exercise a daily activity.

“Participating in an event such as this one is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved with community outreach at an early age,” CES Principal Carrie Kilian said. “Through this experience we hope to also expand awareness about healthy eating and lifestyles. We are fortunate to have Mrs. O’Connor organize such an outstanding activity for our students.”

Our school also benefits. Schools raising $1,000 or more earn a percentage back for physical education equipment. Center Elementary School has set a goal to raise $2,000. If we reach that goal, we’ll receive a certificate in the amount of $200.
