Brookfield Teacher of the Year: Educator, Dramatist, Football Player

Brookfield's top teacher, Lisa Schang, has a diverse set of interests, from the classroom to the stage to the football field.

Whisconier Middle School teacher Lisa Schang was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year for Brookfield Public Schools.

The following statement from the district explains why:

Over the last 18 years, Lisa’s journey has lead her from special education at Center School to finally 5th grade math at Whisonier. She has dabbled in social studies, science and literacy along the way.

In the classroom, Lisa empowers her students to challenge themselves and encourages them to help others grasp the concepts being discovered. This creates an environment that is built on the foundation of community responsibility and spirit.

Students share mistakes and use it as a building block to learning; they then celebrate the success when a classmate conquers a difficult task.

School pride and the competitive spirit permeates everything Lisa does in and out of school.

Every March Lisa can be heard on the loudspeaker leading Whisconier through spirit week and March Madness. Her enthusiasm and humor not only resonate with the student body, but with her colleagues.

Outside the classroom, she initiated the first drama club at WMS, and coached basketball at WMS and BHS. Recently she has added track and field to her repertoire. Somehow Lisa has found the time to also play woman’s football for the Danbury Nitros and support the Dorothy Day Hospitality House with her church group.

Her talents as a teacher, mentor, coach, motivator and humanitarian are just a few of the reasons Lisa Schang is the 2013 Brookfield Teacher of the Year.
