BOE Evaluates Music Curriculum, Summer Repairs and Upgrades

Board of Education Meeting Notes

Brookfield Public School District's music program will continue to be reviewed and a plan for improvement will be developed with the help of an outside consultant this fall. The music curriculum has been under review by a Board of Education (BOE) sub-committee, who spent six months examining the program.

At their August 18 meeting, BOE member Jane Miller explained, "During those discussions I thought we really made some great progress. After the June meeting we decided to hire a consultant to come into the district to evaluate the entire music program to be sure that we truly are developing our students as musicians."

According to Assistant Superintendent Genie Slone, there are many different options and possibilities to consider in the higher level music classes.  "Whatever we can do, we are looking to improve our program. We want to make sure we can prepare our students for either a career in music or a lifelong appreciation of music."

The board sub-committee will lay out the concerns and goals for the program with the consultant, who will then go into the classrooms to observe and make recommendations for improvement and compliance with state standards.

"There are standards; this is frankly one of the reasons we are bringing someone in," Slone said, "To make sure we are aligned with state standards."

Other topics covered at the meeting included the district's summer building projects, most of which have been completed, or will be completed by the first day of school. "The schools are really looking fresh and vibrant," said Superintendent Tony Bivona.

  • The work in the parking lot at Brookfield High School (BHS) is near completion. A water line between the pump house and the school was repaired, as part of the high school renovation project
  • Major restoration of the roof at BHS is complete, although the edging is still being finished.
  • The location of the Nursing office at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School (HHES) has been moved up to the second floor, closer to the main entrance to make it more accessible to parents picking up sick children.
  • There was an unanticipated repair at Whisconier Middle School (WMS). The boiler seals began to leak and have been corrected this summer.
  • Three water heaters were installed in the boy's locker room.
  • The elevator upgrade at BHS should be completed by the start of school.
  • Sound proofing of the observation room for Center Elementary School's (CES) preschool classroom has been completed.
  • The electrical system in the HHES computer lab was upgraded.
  • The scoreboard at BHS has been replaced, thanks to a $20,000 donation from Iroquois Transmissions. It will be installed early next week and ready to go for the fall sports season.
