BOE Budget Roundtable Discussion 7PM Monday at BHS

Now is the time to have a say in what you would like to see in the 2012-2013 Board of Eduaction budget proposal.

This Monday evening, the Board of Education will be having our first Budget Roundtable discussion at 7 p.m. at BHS. We typically have held these on Saturday mornings and they have been very poorly attended in recent years (although I do want to thank the few whom have faithfully attended). I can honestly understand that spending a Saturday morning in November discussing the school budget isn't at the top of anyone's list of things to do on the weekend. However, these are important meetings and discussions.

The interest in the budget naturally picks up in the spring before and after the annual Town Meeting leading up to the budget referendum. At that time, we usually hear an awful lot about what people think about the budget and what they want, don't want and what they think should be done, etc. But at that point, the only real ability you have in terms of influencing the budget is by either voting "Yes" or "No." The time for having more input is NOW, prior to our developing our budget proposal.

We have moved the Roundtable to Monday evening in the hopes that more people may attend. We recognize that for many, weekends are for family and for relaxing. We also know that weeknights are not likely to be ideal either, but we did want to try something different.

So I am hopeful that you will come and spend some time with us to discuss the school budget. We usually have members of the Board of Finance and Board of Selectmen in attendance too and I suspect that a number of the newly elected members of those Boards and the Board of Education will be there, too. So, this can be a great time to express your interests and concerns to them as well. You may also get to hear some of their opinions and find out more about some of them.

Please come to BHS on Monday night and have your voices heard, yet again. I promise that you'll be home in time for Monday Night Football or to tuck your child into bed or whatever other things you need to do for yourself and your family on most nights. But the time you spend with us will be time that we will be listening to you.
