Brookfield Voters Approve $5.3M Parks Renovation Plan Tuesday

The second Parks Revitalization Project passed at referendum by 261 votes.

Brookfield voters approved the $5.3 million Parks Revitalization Project at referendum Tuesday by a vote of 1,366-1,105, a margin of 261 ballots.

The 2,471 ballots cast represents 25.5 percent of Brookfield’s registered voters, slightly lower turnout than the previous parks referendum in 2010.

Original Story: 1:18 p.m.

Foot traffic was light Tuesday morning at both of Brookfield’s polling places, as residents and property owners cast their votes on the proposed $5.3 million renovations to Town Park Beach and Cadigan Park.

As of 1 p.m., a total of 839 votes had been cast at both polling places — 294 at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School (District I) and 545 at Brookfield High School (District II) — representing 8.7 percent of Brookfield's 9,675 registered voters.

“It’s been like this all day,” Brookfield High School poll moderator Paula Hopewell said Tuesday, pointing to a gym nearly empty of voters.

Voting at the gym at Huckleberry Hill Elementary was just as slow Tuesday morning.

“It will pick up when they come home from work,” poll moderator Irene Berger said, as many people either forget to vote first thing in the morning or don’t have time.

A previous version of the Parks Revitalization Plan failed at referendum in 2010 by a vote of 1,384-1,206. (A second question on the $10 million paving project passed in the same vote, 1,656-934.)

Polls will be open at both polling places Tuesday until 8 p.m.
