Campaign Notebook: McMahon, Murphy Debates Scheduled

News and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Senate

It appears that the debates between Linda McMahon and Chris Murphy have been more or less settled for now. While Murphy committed to nine debates leading up the November election, McMahon has agreed to the following four, according to her campaign.

  • Oct. 7, hosted by WFSB on Face the State
  • Oct. 11, hosted by Fox 61 and the Hartford Courant at the University of Connecticut
  • Oct. 15, hosted by The Day and WTNH at the Garde Theater in New London
  • Oct. 18, hosted by the Connecticut Broadcasters Association in Hartford

Fifth District

It's a tale of two polls. A pro-Elizabeth Esty poll showed the Democrat leading Republican Andrew Roraback by nine points. A more recent poll commissioned by the Roraback campaign tells a different story. National Research Inc. interviewed 400 likely voters and found Roraback leading by a 42-35 percent margin.

Other Congressional Races

THIRD DISTRICT

Rosa DeLauro (D) says that Democrats care about fixing the so-called “War on Drugs” but Reason, a libertarian magazine, says the congresswoman can’t offer any proof of this belief.

The magazine said that, “DeLauro wasn’t particularly interested in talking about the specifics of Obama's drug policy, returning again to his domestic policy agenda.” The article added, “She rejected the suggestion that the Obama administration was a disappointment on drugs, saying ‘I don’t buy that, no.’”

Wayne Winsley (R) shared a video of Fairfield County investor Peter Schiff posing as an anti-capitalism advocate at the Democratic National Convention. With his tongue firmly planted in cheek, Schiff finds people to agree that corporate profits should be banned. “You can’t make this stuff up,” Winsley said on Twitter.

FOURTH DISTRICT

Jim Himes (D) talked with firefighters in Fairfield about public unions and the “vilification” of government employees, reports the Fairfield Minuteman.

Steve Obsitnik (R) warned of a looming “tax Armageddon” when addressing the Greenwich Republican Women’s Forum last week, reports the Greenwich Post. Tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year, creating uncertainty in Washington D.C.

I would recommend supporting an increase similar to Ridgefield's which was under 2% (1.97%). If aRead More community like Ridgefield can perform at high levels with an increase under 2%, the Board of Education, in asking for almost twice that is openly admitting that they have installed inefficient management in school administration. Further, the sewer system on the referendum will require municipal funding since it is backed by the full faith and credit of the town of Brookfield and reduces the town's borrowing ability - the advertisement for which indicated it would not impact municipal funding.
