Brookfield police responded to the scene of an alleged hit and run in the area of 83 Federal Road just before 5 p.m. on Aug. 25.

The operator of a Jeep Wranger at the scene told officers that a tan Subaru had struck her car and fled. The driver was able to provide a description of the Subaru and its driver.

Police found the Subaru parked in the south side parking lot of Kohl’s and reportedly observed heavy front end damage. Bystanders nearby told police the driver had just parked and fled on foot into the shopping plaza at 14 Candlewood Lake Road.

Bystanders were also able to give officers an additional description of the driver.

As officers were canvassing the area, they observed a suspect inside one of the local businesses matching the descriptions provided to them. The suspect was identified as Douglas Mello Lopes, 29, of E 102 St., New York, NY.

Lopes told officers that he was the operator of the Subaru at the time of the accident.

Lopes was placed under arrest on charges of failure to maintain proper lane, operating without a license and evading responsibility. He was released on $200 bond and is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Sept. 6.
