Dick's Removes Rifles from Danbury Store

Dick's Sporting Goods at the Danbury Fair Mall removed its rifles and other firearms from its shelves and is leaving them empty until further notice out of respect for the shooting victims and their families in Newtown and throughout the area.

Dick's Sporting Goods issued the following release:

"We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

"Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

"The modern sporting rifle looks like an assault weapon, although it isn't one. It was removed from all Dick's Stores.

"We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy."

I doubt this comment will ever appear, but since when have they been "selling" guns at Dick's? I have seen them on display in the Danbury store but thought the guns were merely advertizing props. I did not realize such awful things were actually sold by them

Me too. I had no idea sports stores like Dick's sold guns. No wonder thousands are being sold. Hello? - guns have nothing to do with sports.

Saeeda, hunting is considered a sport. So is competitive shooting.

I guess no one gets the flyers from Dick's sporting that come in the newspapers or people do not look at them if some are expressing surprise that Dick's sells firearms. I guess these same people would be shocked to know that Cabella's, nearest one is Hartford, also sells firearms? Bolt action rifles and scopes for hunting are common. A semi, assualt style, high capacity mag capable rifle like the AR-15 and other look alikes is no type of a hunting weapon. In hunting if you miss on the first shot a semi is useless. The target animal will be long gone before you can re sight, re acquire and fire. I am also against use of tripods when it comes to hunting. Shotguns can be used for sporting clays and for fowl and ducks. Sporting clays, you know where they say 'Pull' and clay disks fly into the air.
