Brookfield Police Crack Down on Distracted Drivers

As part of a regional effort to increase enforcement of Connecticut’s distracted driving laws, Brookfield police — joined by officers from Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield — issued a combined 63 tickets in two days at the end of June.

Police issued 44 infractions for using a cell phone without a hands-free device, 15 for texting while driving and four written warnings.

The infractions carry a fine of $125.

According to Sgt. Peter Frengs, spotters in plain cloths at several locations throughout town identified violators, who were then pulled over by uniformed police officers.

Frengs said the department and regional force will be holding three more enforcement periods this year, with the next planned for sometime in October.
