Brookfield Officer Gets Unpaid Suspension for September Bar Fight

Officer placed on unpaid leave but no criminal charges filed.

A Brookfield police officer was placed on unpaid leave after an internal department investigation into a fight between two officers at 189 Sports Café on Federal Road in September.

No criminal charges were filed, according to Police Chief Robin Montgomery, and the names of the officers involved are not being released.

According to several eyewitness accounts, off-duty Brookfield officers were at 189 Sports Café on Sept. 12, continuing the celebration for a retiring officer. Late in the evening, a male and female officer got into a physical altercation, resulting in one reported injury.

The fight broke up and the parties left the bar before the first call was made to police.

Brookfield police conducted an internal and criminal investigation and determined that only internal disciplinary measures were necessary.

The male officer was placed on suspension without pay “for several days,” Chief Montgomery said, however he declined to specify how long the suspension lasted.

The male officer was also on paid leave during the investigations but is now back on active duty after serving his suspension.

Both the internal and criminal investigations are closed, according to Maj. James Purcell.
