Poll: Should Government Tax Toward Better Health?

New Zealand has raised cigarette taxes to record highs in the hopes of getting everyone to quit smoking. Do you think government should take that role?

On Thursday, the government of New Zealand approved new cigaratte taxes aimed at being so onerous that all the nation's smokers will quit.

The government approved "a 40 percent hike in tobacco taxes over the next four years," The Associated Press reported. "Prices here are already among the highest in the world, and by 2016 they will top 20 New Zealand dollars ($15) a pack on average."

What do you thnk? Is this a good tactic? Or too instrusive? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

Governments role, as defined in the Constitution, does not extend to behavior modification through taxation. If government really wants to accomplish raising revenue by creating a "sin" tax, they should legalize marijuana and tax those sales. "A Government Big Enough to Give You Everything You Want, is Strong Enough to Take Everything You Have." Thomas Jefferson or Gerald Ford, take your pick.
