Key to Awesomeness: For their projects to complete their Eagle Awards, twins Chris and Kevin Peterson pursued their separate interests in ways to improve our community.

Chris’ project was erosion control on a trail at Williams Park. Chris filled in the existing gullies and re-graded a 350-foot section of hiking trail at the park. He also installed six cedar water bars on the trail and used his surplus branches to build two brush piles for sheltering wildlife. The trail is used by both the community and the BHS Cross Country team, who use it as part of their home course.

Chris is a member of the Cross Country team, as well as the Indoor and Outdoor Track teams. Chris also enjoys several other outdoor sports including mountain and freestyle , backpacking, skiing and canoeing. He plans on attending Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks to study Environmental Science in the fall.

Kevin Peterson’s Eagle project involved improvements to the cemetery. Troop 135, of which Chris and Kevin are members, holds its meetings at Prince of Peace. Kevin decided to replace the kiosk that was badly worn with a new, more weather proof one, especially as the door he designed is unlike the original and should keep out the elements better over time. He added stone curbing to the side gardens, planted 17 deer resistant perennial plants, planted two white pine trees along the perimeter and added mulch to the side gardens as well. The last part of Kevin’s project was to rebuild the site’s decrepit tool shed.

Kevin is also a member of the BHS track team, participating in both hurdles and relays. He plays in two rock bands, both of which write their own music. One of the bands is in the process of recording a CD.

In the fall, Kevin plans on attending Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida to study Sound Recording and Music Production.
