Norbert 'Mitch' Mitchell, 64

January 29, 1948 — July 12, 2012

Norbert Edward Mitchell Jr. (“Mitch”), 64 of Brookfield, died surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Pam (Huebner) Mitchell. Mitch was born in Danbury, January 29, 1948, the son of Mary A. Mitchell of Danbury and the late Norbert Edward Mitchell Sr.

Mitch was a Brookfield resident for the last 61 years. He was a graduate of St. Peter Elementary School, Danbury High School and he attended Bryant Business College in Providence, RI. He played little league and junior league baseball in Danbury and played shortstop for the Danbury High School baseball team. Mitch played softball in the Danbury Industrial League and Brookfield Softball League for many years. He was a member of Ridgewood Country Club and enjoyed many rounds of golf.

Mitch was a member of the Danbury Elks Lodge and the Danbury Lions Club. He was an Associate Director of the New Milford Bank and Trust Co., and Associate Director for Ann's Place "Home of I Can" and past president of the Danbury chapter of the Independent Connecticut Petroleum Association.

Mitch spent the last 50 years working at the Norbert E. Mitchell Co., Inc. originally as a mechanic, and then driver, serviceman, General Manager, Vice President and Owner.

Mitch was a New York Yankees fan and always went to opening day with his Wednesday night card buddies. He was an avid NASCAR fan and in the late '60s and '70s he built and drove his own race car. His favorite place was his cabin in Maine where he enjoyed spending time with his family over the last 25 years.

In addition to his wife, Pam and his mother, Mary, Mitch is survived by four sons, Norbert Mitchell III and his wife Samantha of Danbury, and their children Molly, Abby and Thomas; Robert Mitchell and his wife Jennifer of Brookfield, and their children Mason and Mackenzie; Michael Mitchell of Brookfield and his daughter Ashley; and Matthew Mitchell and his wife Jessica of Norwalk, and their daughters Isabella and Amelia; his step daughter, Audrey Mockovak of Newtown and her sons Eric and Kyle; his step son, Daryl Stevens of Pawling, New York and his daughter Crystal; one brother, Donald Mitchell and his wife Nancy of Brookfield; two sisters, Janet Mitchell Hoyt of Newtown and Kathy Durgy and her husband Bill of Brookfield, along with several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

The family would like to say a special Thank You to the Hospice staff, Maria, Jean, Chris, Sharon, Elaine and Mary, as well as to the staff of Praxair Cancer Center, Dr. J. Pessimenti, Dr. Michael Cohenuram, Christine and Annett, and to all those that cared for Mitch. Thank you to Dr. Gary Freidlander and Dr. Frank Detterbeck at Yale.

Funeral Information

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at , 159 Whisconier Road, Brookfield. Entombment will follow in St. Peter Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 16 at , 786 Federal Road, Brookfield.
