Korea Vet, Active Brookfielder Frank Johnson Sr., 80

Arthur “Frank” Johnson, Sr, of Brookfield, beloved husband of the late Marion (Joyce) Johnson, died peacefully at Bethel Healthcare on Sunday, Sept. 8. He was born in Syracuse, NY on Nov. 20, 1932. He has made his home in Brookfield for more than 50 years.


Frank was a Veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving with the United States Marine Corp. In the years of 1951 until 1954, he served as a sergeant in the 1st Engineering Battalion, 1st Marine Division; from 1956 until 1961, he served as a training instructor for the 107th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division of the New York Army National Guard.

Frank worked for New York Telephone and later SNET in various capacities, retiring after 32 years of employment as a construction supervisor. During his retirement years, he worked for Sears as a service technician and later as a sales associate for Office Max.

For many years, Frank was active in the Brookfield community, serving as Special Constable for the Brookfield Police Department. He was also involved in many organizations; was acting Commander of the VFW Post 10201 in Brookfield, and was acting Commandant of the Hat City Detachment of the USMC League; was a member of the Korean War Veterans, and the Danbury Council of Veterans.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Poppy.” He enjoyed his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities; as well as traveling with his friends from the Brookfield Senior Center, and going to casinos.

He will be sadly missed by his son, Arthur Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Christine of Newtown; his daughter, Sheryl Johnson and her partner, Mark Sternburg of Brookfield; and his grandchildren, Lauren, Taylor and Spencer Johnson. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, John Joyce of Fishkill, NY.

Funeral Information

Funeral Services will be held at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. Entombment in the St. Peter Garden Mausoleum will follow with military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday between the hours of 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
