Genevieve 'Gena' Harrison Smalley, 94

February 01, 1918 - November 12, 2012

Genevieve Charlotte Harrison Smalley, age 94, beloved wife of the late Charles W. Smalley passed away Monday November 12, 2012 at home with her loving children at her side.

Daughter of the late Charlotte Elsenboss Harrison Hayt and M. Frank Harrison. Genevieve was born February 1, 1918 in Bridgeport.

A lifelong resident of Brookfield, “Gena” attended Obtuse School, a one room school house at the top of Route 133 and graduated from Danbury High School in 1936. During her high school years Gena worked at F.W. Woolworth Co., the 5 & 10 on Main Street in Danbury. She and Charles married in 1936 and built their home on the former potato field at the family farm.

Gena worked for Barden Corporation during WWII. While raising her family she was an assistant Girl Scout leader for many years, worked on numerous committees at the Brookfield Congregational Church, teaching Sunday school and playing in the bell choir. As the church housekeeper she retired after 30 years in 1998 at age 80. While working at the church she was also employed by Hoffman’s Egg Farm in Brookfield for over 25 years and became known to many as the “Egg Lady.”

A devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Genevieve will be greatly missed by her three children, Barbara Schoen and her husband George of Titusville Fl., Charlotte Piskura and her husband Albert of Washington, CT and Charles “Bill” Smalley and his wife P.J. of Warren, CT. Her seven grandchildren, Bonnie Piskura Murray, Susan Schoen Wyatt, Wendy Piskura Eischen, Karen Smalley, Cindy-Anne Schoen Richardson, A.J. Piskura, III, and Cheryl Smalley Kinney. Her ten great grandchildren, Rachel Murray, David Murray, Wesley Murray, Jordan Kinney, Erik Murray, Brandon Abraham, Neill and Scott Richardson, Henry and Anna Eischen.

Genevieve was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Elizabeth Cipolla and Cornelia Elsenboss Harrison.

Funeral Information

The family will receive friends at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Road, in Brookfield, on Friday November 16, 2012 between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at The Brookfield Congregational Church (crossing of Rt. 25 and 133) in Brookfield on Saturday November 17, 2012 at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
