Joe's Glass Art Blog: A Visual Break for You (2)

Take a timeout from the heavy-handed news of the world with visuals of an installation at ELMO restaurant in Manhattan.

With all my blogs for the Patch, I will be sharing images and information about glass. I’d like for you to consider this a visual break from the news of the world. Calming, warm handmade art... I will save my images of Bart and Lisa Simpson on the cross for a later posting.

Today I want to share glass work I just hung at Elmo Restaurant, in Chelsea. If you haven’t been, it is a very lively bar and restaurant on 7th Avenue and 19th Street. These are some of the largest glass works I have ever made, measuring 40 x 40 inches each. The work is for sale after their four month showing. The attached photo shows three of the seven pieces placed over the bar.

These three are color variants of “Gymnasium of Drama” and are made of glass, solder, set in a steel frame with LED lights. (2012).

The identity of this young woman is a mystery, her name and status has been lost. “Du Gymnase Dramatique” or “The Gymnasium of Drama” is a semblance of a fancy dressed girl of grammar school age. Though she is dressed to the nines, the vitality of her delicate features survive the competition of her elaborate fresh wrappings, much like a fancy wrapped bit of delicate chocolate.

The four other works include Henri III, Portrait of a Lady, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Millie Plessis, of the Theater Francuio (1835).
